Q&A
I'm almost 50 now but I had something like that happen to me when I was a teenager. I had really long hair, went in for a trim, and left with a good 8 inches less hair. It was still lower than my shoulders, but it was a lot she took off. After I stopped crying I wrote a letter to complain and they responded by sending me coupons for a free haircut at their salon. As if I would ever want to step foot in that place again.
track me
It's a real thing. A lot of people in r/longhair have experienced similar.
It's why I usually cut my own hair. The last time I went to a salon, not only did she cut a good 3" off for a "trim," the next thing I knew she'd pulled out a flatiron and was going to town on the back of my head with it while my hair was still wet.
I have stick-straight hair and have never, ever used a flatiron. I'd specifically been talking to her about how fragile my hair seemed and how I was afraid of it breaking off. Got zero advice on making my hair stronger, but she pulls out a flatiron. I politely asked her to stop and she was furious. Was just icy and nasty to me after that, refused to style my hair at all. I had told her blow-drying was fine, but still left the salon with damp hair.
Complained to the owner, who told me that we just weren't "compatible." It wasn't a date ffs it was a full-service salon and the cut alone was $80. Luckily I got my money back, but was also told not to come back ever again.
I've had some great stylists though. Several had those combs with measurements on them, so that when you ask for an inch off that's what you get.
I've never had a specific hairdresser I go to regularly because of this. I always tell myself "Okay, this person obviously doesn't like listening. I'll try finding someone else." Cue the never ending cycle of getting my hair cut too short and never returning to whoever did it.
My sister cuts my hair now. I will never go back unless I ACTUALLY want my hair cut short (which I've done a couple of times now and never had any issues with).
Recently saw a video of hair stylists blind guessing how long 3-5 inches is with a tape measurer. Each and every person was off. Only 2 were somewhat close in their guesses.
Yes, cut my own hair. I would never trust a hair stylist after working hard at growing my hair long. When I was young and grew my hair out went for a trim, the hairdresser had a mullet type cut, I wanted trim with very slight layers. Left with a mullet identical to hers.
Yep! Last time I went for a trim and asked for 3 inches they cut like 7 inches off on one side, and like 1 inch off on the other side leaving me all lopsided. Best they could do was 5$ discount without an apology. That was like 4 years ago, so needless to say i just do it myself now lol. Guy btw
I got my long hair trimmed abiut a month or so ago. I had to stress vehemently that I do not want to lose much length. Obviously some has to come off, but he took about an inch. I'm okay with that.
As a short-haired person, this thread it kinda fascinating.
The past few times I've went in for a trim I was just VERY specific with the stylist.
"I want X amount taken off, straight across, no V or U shape and nothing more. Show me what you think X amount is with your hand on my hair in the mirror, I will tell you if that's okay before you start cutting or if it's too much. I love my hair and will NOT be happy if you take off too much"
I know it may come off as rude but I always get exactly what I want and they're very polite about everything. Having them show you before cutting is a great thing to do because if we've learned anything from penis sizes, a couple if inches can mean WAY different things to different people.
If you're feeling extra sassy you could tell them if they butcher your hair you're going to butcher theirs in return but it might come off a tad Karen.
I just underwent this tragedy about two weeks ago and I had long luscious curls too. I’ve cried and cried over my hair, spoke to the salon owner and they offered me to come back for a free “touch-up” but I don’t want any of them touching my hair again. I cut it myself for years and what was supposed to be a rare treat turned into a nightmare. So obviously I too will now be cutting my own hair forever lol!
This is why I cut my own hair. Nope.
They always do this and say the same thing: “you had a LOT of damage.”
I had this happen to me once as a kid, I was supposed to get a trim, but she cut off 12 inches, but only on the top - a jellyfish cut - in 1993.
It was my grandmother cutting my hair and she was just starting to show the signs of dementia. I never let her near me with scissors again.
Omg. So sorry that happened to you, but imagining a pissed off kid with jellyfish hair is making me laugh right now.
They think they know what's "best" for your hair when they pull that shit. There's no excuse for cutting off more than the client asks for.
Omg happened to me too
Why do I feel I experienced the opposite. Was sick and tired of my ass length hair. Told the stylist to chop it to my shoulder. She acted like I'm personally cutting off her hair, not my own lmao
You're not crazy. This is a legitimately documented phenomenon.
Go to a gay male barber.
I'm a hairdresser and I developed a long hair following because I helped women grow out their hair. I'm my experience, lots of stylist are stupid cruel with long hair. It's truly a weird control fetish. They are either stupid cruel or just stupid
I trim my own hair, partially because they cut too much and partially because I don’t think their labor is worth $75 (which is the lowest rate for any non-Supercuts option in my city)
