just got a bunch of my friends to watch southland tales and megalopolis back to back and it crystalized my opinions on both movies perfectly - southland tales is a true masterpiece of shit, timeless and prophetic in spite of how it drips with the raw essence of the bush era, unbelievably ambitious and stupid and funny, the rock doing the stupid thing with his hands didnt piss me off nearly as much this time cause i realised they were definitely playing it for laughs. megalopolis on the other hand is absolutely unwatchable drivel, minecraft movie-esque in that you're watching solely for the next funny line read or dogshit visual effect (which are often hilarious to give it credit), extremely displeasing dumb guy politics like the screenplay was written by a elon musk reply guy back when there were still libs doing that (the megalopolis is not unlike x, the everything app), having shia lebeoufs character dress up in drag to do le funny sex crimes should be punishable by death. it may sound harsh but i think it truly would have been a justice if coppola went to his grave never having gotten to bring his vision to life
theyre deeply similar movies, but southland tales has everything to say, and megalopolis nothing.
