I’m exhibiting an object piece titled On Yukio Mishima in the exhibition “2025 Yukio Mishima Centenary = 100th Years of Shōwa: The Sea of Fertility — The Emptiness of Eternal Recurrence.”
This work materializes my book On Yukio Mishima, serving as a critical homage to Mishima’s aesthetics and anguish, his nihilism and vitality, his body and death, his action and literature.

My new essay collection What Is the Use of Literature? will be published by Iwanami Shoten on July 16!
These essays on literature and the arts were written around the same time as At the Heart of the Matter, On Yukio Mishima, and Mt. Fuji.
The title comes from the opening lecture included in the volume.

初めてルーズベルト島に上陸しました。行きはマンハッタンからフェリーで、帰りはトラムウェイで。完全に忘れてましたが、『レオン』という映画、最後、女の子がこのトラムウェイに乗るんでしたね。あとから人に言われて思い出しました。
I set foot on Roosevelt Island for the first time today. Took the ferry from Manhattan to get there, and the tramway on the way back. I had completely forgotten, but someone later reminded me—the tramway appears in Léon: The Professional, when the girl rides it at the very end.

初期から晩年にかけてのAlice Coltraneのナンバーが中心で、お父さんのナンバーも後期のExpression を一曲披露。コルトレーン家の屋号を背負ってる感じがした。

Yesterday, I went to the Nomad Jazz Festival in Madison Square Park to hear Ravi Coltrane — a free outdoor concert 😊
The set was centered on Alice Coltrane’s works from her early to later years, with one piece from his father’s late period, Expression. You could really feel the weight of carrying the Coltrane family name.
もう一月前ですが、独立記念日はまだ家探しの最中で、一人寂しくホテルで過ごす予定でしたが、ひょんなご縁で、さるやんごとなきお方の知遇を得て、グリーンウッチで屋外バーベキューにご招待いただき、翌日はスタンフォードで船上花火見物にもお呼ばれしました。人様のご親切が身に沁みます😊
A month ago, on Independence Day, I was still in the middle of apartment hunting and expecting to spend it alone at a hotel. But by a twist of fate, I had the honor of meeting a distinguished person, who kindly invited me to an outdoor barbecue in Greenwich, and the next day, I enjoyed a fireworks cruise in Stamford with some people. Deeply touched by such kindness. 😊
