Can anyone verify that the Asus WRX90E-SAGE board has x8/x8 bifurcation as an option? The manual seems to suggest that there is only x16, what I think is x8/x4/x4, and x4/x4/x4/x4 (what ASUS calls RAID?), but no x8/x8.

In contrast, the WRX80E WIFI that I have also does not list it in the manual, but my BIOS does have x8/x8 as an option. I also have a WRX80E WIFI II that both has it in the BIOS, and also lists it in the manual. So there seems to be no correlation.

According to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFgDxStELkA 27 there is no x8/x8 as he is going through the BIOS options. Sucks if ASUS removed a feature that was on the earlier version. But he also had an early version of the board, and they may have added it back in a later BIOS update.

Would appreciate any input from current owners (I know there aren’t many).

I would expect 6 of the PCIe slots to have x8/x8 available if it is implemented, because they nerfed the 7th PCIe slot on the 90E compared to the 80E (it is only x8 instead of x16). Not sure why they did that, guess to add dedicated M.2 slots without sharing bandwidth with U.2/SlimSAS instead.

I’m running 13 GPUs on the 80E and would like to transfer that config over to 90E, but x8/x8 is a necessity!

Covered that in the video. Only x8x4x4 is a thing in infinite asus wisdom im sure

There has been no bios update since the video.

Thanks, will wait and watch I guess. Sucks that ASUS didn’t carry it forward from the previous generation.

I can’t even rely on the BIOS update logs to tell me if/when they add the feature. There is no mention of it in the logs for 80E, and yet I know they added it in one of the updates.

There is a x16 and x4x4x4x4 modes for all slots. The top slot also has x8x4. I am going to contact Asus to see if they can update.

Only the top slot has x8x4x4? I thought all slots had x8x8x8x8 and x8x4x4.

If you do have any success contacting or feeding back something to ASUS, it would be great!

Meanwhile, I do see some success using PLX switches without Bifurcation support, but that does complicate the setup a lot.

Currently in contact with Asus. Their support seems very baffled by my request…

I have had not had much success communicating things like this to them either. There has to be some way to talk to the EPYC board support team or something, but I haven’t found it. Good luck!

External PLX switches do seem to work to bypass any type of PCIe connection that the board does not support, including muxing PCIe Gen4 devices into Gen5 without losing bandwidth. Like this one: PCIe gen5 Switch 52-Lane Mircochip Switchtec PM50052 PLX – C-Payne PCB Design 33
But they are pricey.

There was a random bios update a couple of weeks ago however it did not add and new bifurcation options. It seems for the WRX80 x8x8 supports was added in just a random BIOS update in its life cycle. Wasn’t event documented

For the record, it is the 6th slot, not the 7th, that is only 8 lanes.

Which is great, because it makes the 7th slot ideal for a large 16x GPU, so that it doesn’t block other slots.

Is it slots 4,5,6,7 again that has the built-in re-drivers on the WRX90?

Those have honestly been a huge pain to deal with in the WRX80, ASUS probably didn’t use very high quality re-drivers. I’m beginning to see the wisdom in packing more MCIO ports closer to the CPU instead of slots. You can drive or re-time the MCIO however you need later.

13 days later

Oops, my bad! Yes I meant 5,6,7, it is the same with the WRX80 versions also.

Also, the C-Payne PCIe switch I mentioned earlier has an issue with ADA-class NVidia GPUs presently: they are forced into PCIe Gen3. Christian tells me there is a fix on the way via a firmware update soon.

EDIT: The software fix did it, now I can do better than x8/x8 and get full x16/x16 gen4 on x16 gen5 with no bifurcation.

That still works to bypass bifurcation: Gen3 x16 = Gen4 x8, which is what the bifurcation would do on a Gen4 platform at least. The fix would be needed to take advantage of Gen4 x16 on Gen5 platforms.

In regards to your concern about multiple GPUs running at 8 lanes on the motherboard, our Technical Support Department would like to confirm the following: "Is customer willing to accept special BIOS for added X8+X8 option? Which BIOS version was the customer willing to base on to build a special BIOS? Did the customer add one special PCIE slot, the X8+X8 option, or all PCIE slots?"

Looks like I might be making progress with customer support to get this added

Fingers crossed! And if asked, the answer is 8x/8x in all 16x slots!

@grimulkan I would love to know the answer to this because I bought a WRX90 when they first came out and it sucked! I had to return it and get a WRX80. With the 5090’s around the corner I want to be ahead of the curve, but if this board doesn’t have 8x8x bifurcation, it’s not worth it.

Let’s hope crnoddin’s request gets some attention then! I too returned my bord so someone else would need to verify if they ever add it. If you are desperate, external PLX switch still works, though is additional cost.

This is great news. I have a NIC use case (not-too-expensive dual 100G ports) where x8+x8 would work wonders (and x4+x4+x4+x4 doesn’t cut it) .

Indeed great news. We need x8/x8 for at least the first slot. Be nice of all the 16 lane slots could do x8/x8. Please let the forum know when the new BIOS is ready. Any ETA?

Please let us know if Asus support was able to provide you with a special BIOS that includes x8x8, looking into building an 8x4090 setup by bifurcating one of the x16 slots.

Why don’t all participants here open support tickets with asus for 8x+8x? Surely that’s better than only one, right?

Squeaky wheel getting attention, and all…

I’m reaching out today

EDIT: Well, I see now why ASUS support has a poor reputation. Immediate response from rep: “OK we will add it to the firmware soon” - “Great, is there some way I can track this request, to find out when it is put on a roadmap, if testing is needed, notification of release, etc?” - “No, that is handled by higher level support. We have no communication with them” - “So how will the product team know this has been requested?” - “I will communicate it to them” … “OK……” - would not provide any direct or indirect escalation path, even with a registered SN on my account :disappointed:

This info about slots 5-7 being different on the WRX90E-Sage is very interesting to me. I am using multiple PCIe-U.2 adapters for 4x U.2 SSDs (so needing to be x4x4x4x4). For a while I thought some of my adapters were bad because only the first 3 drives on the adapter would be detected. But I later discovered that it only happens in slot 5. Same adapters work just fine, x4x4x4x4, in slots 1-4.

Slot 6 (which is 8x) can field a 2x adapter with x4x4 bifurcation just fine.

Never tried bifurcating slot 7, as it’s the obvious choice for the GPU.

Thankfully in my use case I have things that don’t need bifurcation I can put in all of those slots (mellanox NIC, HBA and my GPU in slot 7). Slots 1-4 are enough for all my U.2 drives.

I suspect they should never have tried to push everything with full PCIe slots. A lot of the server boards can push that much IO just fine with Epyc boards using MCIO where needed. But they may think of the WRX platform as some kind of prosumer thing, and want to provide full PCIe slots for easy compatibility.

FYI- I finally made some progress with Asus. I accidentally succeeded in escalating a request by asking for x8/x8 in a mostly unrelated RMA ticket (which ended up not being an RMA, anyway…)

On July 3, I received this:

According to our higher department that regarding the specification attached
Why did you want x8/x8? What type of card did you install? Please provide model and link for the card We need it to have custom bios.
What custom bios did you want? latest version?

Sounds very promising, like they’re willing to provide a build. My response was along the lines of:

  • I prefer the BIOS immediately before 0904 for now, until I can test 0904, at which point I would like 0904
  • I will use a C-Payne MCIO x16 → x8/x8 → two device adapters, each with an RTX3090 running @ PCIe 4.0 x8. This is to maximize PCIe slot use, I’m out of slots
  • I didn’t mention a specific slot - and they didn’t ask- so I’m hoping they add it for all of them (excluding the slot already limited to x8, obviously)

I also asked if I could privately share the firmware they provide. If they’re ok with that, I will make a note here once I receive it, and send to those interested via private message.

I’m pretty excited to finally be close to getting this…

Good luck!

I am personally not thrilled to see the question “Why did you want x8/x8?” in today’s day and age though, from the board maker no less.

… and that was actually the second time I was asked. I think it’s because there are many users who are confused about bifurcation and ask for things like this for their storage. Because the first time it was “why do you need x8/x8, m.2 is x4” I hadn’t mentioned storage or m.2, it was just assumed)

We’ll see. I’m optimistic, for now

Seems gigabyte on their TR50/WR90 mobos offer X8/X8 on each slot.

I find it incredible that ASUS doesn’t on all of their X16 slots, I don’t see the reason not to.

The only one I’m not sure if it gives the option for all X16 slots is Asrock.

Good news- I just received a link for the x8/x8 custom bios for ASUS WRX90!

Please send me a direct message if you’re interested. They didn’t instruct me to keep it private, but I’d rather not post it here

(I haven’t yet tested it on my system)

Sent you a DM! With that BIOS I will literally get a WRX90 probably Q3 of this year.

Same, I’ve been tearing my hair out trying to understand why they dont just have this baked already. Trying to run TP8 but just need one x8x8 bifurcation slot and save 1.5k for an active card that does it.

Daaaamn, nice to know that pewdiepie has just the same kind of autism as i do

just wanted to say you’re the goat for sharing the bios with random strangers! came from the recent pewdiepie video where you pm’d him the file & helped with his build! super awesome. have a great week man

Whooo it’s official level1 made it into a Pewdiepie video.
Does this mean the forums is now mainstream!?
