- express card to usb 3.0 'dapter (make sure to check if the card you want to order has proper chipset)
- upgrade the stock display to better one, or even FHD with a mod kit (requires soldering, not something your average caca can do)
- upgrade ram to 16GB of sodimm DDR3. Pay attention to supported frequency and other params. It does not support ECC.
- add internal msata drive
- modden bios. coreboot allows more tinkering but requires more time to get it right. modded bios will give you the stability of regular bios with some advanced options and no peripheral whitelists ( DO NOT TOUCH THE RAM SETTINGS). Can be done internally, but I wouldn't recommend that. I used external flashing setup with rpi0 + pomona soic8 clips on my x230.
You can also install x230 mobo to have build-in usb 3.0 but you will need to do EC mod to use x220 keyboard and 3rd party batteries
