Hurricane Erin strengthens swiftly
The first Atlantic hurricane of 2025 rapidly strengthened to become a Category 5 storm Saturday, with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph. Hurricane Erin was forecast to grow stronger, the National Hurricane Center said, but it was not expected to hit land. Still, Erin was close enough to prompt tropical storm watches for three Caribbean islands. Forecasters, meanwhile, say this year’s season will be especially busy, promising six to 10 hurricanes, at least 3 three of which will grow to become major storms.
