TRACKING ERIN: Hurricane Erin continued its powerful run Saturday afternoon, strengthening with maximum sustained winds near 160 mph as it passed north of the northern Leeward Islands, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Update from National Weather Service Charleston: The threat for deadly Rip Currents and increasing wave heights are expected by early next week. Hurricane Erin has officially become the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season. But not only that: Erin has bumped from 65 kts (Cat1) to 130 kts (Cat5) in a time span of 18 hours. With rapid intensification being defined as an increase in wind speed of 30 kts in 24 hrs, this 65kt-increase is more some sort of superrapid-intensification ... Erin is currently located over 29-30deg C ocean waters. With hurricanes requiring 27deg C sea surface temperatures to sustain themselves & (potentially) further intensify, these extremely warm ocean waters are just additional fuel to the system. And, as the climate keeps warming, it is only expected for these type of rapid intensification events to occur more often towards the future. These type of events are particularly worrisome as they pose elevated risks to coastal communities, hereby challenging ongoing emergency management activities. Today Erin is passing north of the Leeward Islands. While Erin's strongest winds are staying away from the island, Erin's rain bands can still bring quite some impacts to the islands. Hurricane Erin has strengthened into a fearsome Category 5 hurricane as the storm travels west over the Atlantic. The hurricane is not expected to make a direct hit on the United States, but it will still drive dangerous surf conditions along the East Coast. Hurricane Erin rapidly intensifies into a Category 5 in 24 hours, with winds increasing from 75 MPH to 160 MPH and a pressure drop of 79 mb. For comparison, the record for rapid intensification in the Atlantic goes to Hurricane Wilma (2005), which exploded from a tropical storm with 70 MPH to a 175 MPH Category 5 and a pressure drop of 93 mb in just 24 hours.
