Governor Newsom,
I am writing from Florida to express my appreciation for your leadership in protecting democracy and standing up to Republican efforts to manipulate congressional maps. I fully understand the context behind these decisions. Democrats in Washington tried to pass legislation to end partisan gerrymandering nationwide, but those efforts were repeatedly shut down in committee or blocked by filibuster. Even when the opportunity arose to move forward, two Democrats refused to allow us to bypass the filibuster, effectively stalling progress.
What you and your team are doing now is exactly the kind of decisive action that has been long overdue. If California successfully eliminates nine Republican seats through fair redistricting adjustments, the current numbers suggest Democrats would retake the House of Representatives. While no one can predict exactly how the elections will turn out, this is a powerful strategic move and I sincerely hope you are proceeding with it in full force.
Republicans have made it clear that they will use every available tool to secure partisan advantage. Texas Republicans will certainly take that opportunity if it is presented to them. If they are willing to play this game, then Democrats must be equally prepared to play it as well.
Illinois courts have already determined that they will not arrest members who leave the state in protest, and the Texas Supreme Court ruled in 2021 that the responsibility to discipline lawmakers lies with their own legislative body. These precedents make it clear that there is room to act decisively and within the law.
I also want to acknowledge that I am well aware you are not concerned with the noise from trolls on X or other social media platforms. That confidence and focus are exactly what is needed right now. I want you to know that people outside of California, including myself here in Florida, are grateful for your efforts.
