Description
A lot of people have said that this a just a crappy project with specs written by ChatGPT, and also it has a cryptocurrency for some reason. It seems to me that the intent of this project is to amass wealth, so these very people claiming to want a free internet are just scammers themselves. Also, they have an AI chatbot, @slammingprogramming , who just spams filler text written by AI

Honestly, its tough to say for sure, but the spec look promising. I am pretty sure there is going to be some changes to the spec over the next coming weeks or months, this is not a type of project that is made in a day. It seems like people who are not originally on the team is actually working to make this.
I think the cryptocurrency you are referring to was created by THESLAMMERRRRRR(slammingprogramming i assume) to raise money for the bounty program. So, even if it flops or is a scam, it might not matter much. The most important thing seems to be that Betanet has brought together a community that wants to build a private internet.

The spec looks like a horrendous technobabble, which uses a lot of terms that aren't explained or referenced, or straight up misleading. It also lacks fundamental description of what the system is and how it works, instead describing random tidbits. Some of the problems are outlined in other issues in this project.
Actually looking at the spec again, it starts with some kind of "SCION Packet header". What is SCION? What are those packets used for? This isn't explained in the spec. Cursory googling says that SCION routing protocol actually already exists, however the header from official docs for SCION do not match with a random header provided in betanet spec. Why?

Probably a crypto scam, and even if it's not this project is not going anywhere.
zackenbaron commentedon Aug 12, 2025
If they plan to use Python for this project (as they have done in their other projects...), it will be quite slow... Imo.. Rust would be the best choice for such a project.
zackenbaron commentedon Aug 12, 2025
and if they vibe-code like I read in other issues, they will have major security concerns.

@SnakeyKing I am not a official maintainer lmao but ok. But frankly who knows?? I do like a lot of what I HAVE seen so ill be forking and working on this at least because it does have many promising principals.
If you want to believe I'm an AI chatbot that's up to you, perhaps look at my profile and see my contributions to other projects and my own. Either way, again: off topic and non constructive at this point. My main concern is that the raven dev team doesn't appear to be actually engaging with the issues list or repo currently.
slammingprogramming commentedon Aug 12, 2025
I've not heard of this slammer but I get why you'd think there's some correlation there. I think your last sentence is key.
infradragon commentedon Aug 12, 2025
The only reason crypto is even mentioned is because the funding for the bounties were done in Solana, which is not their coin and not affiliated with Raven. Raven does not have a Raven or Betanet related coin as far as I know.

At this point we have pretty much figured out that this project in its current state isn’t going anywhere and is just an AI written cashgrab/scam/it doesn’t matter if the spec is complete ass made in 20 minutes of chatgpt promts. But it has shown like Erk Sterk said, that plenty of people really like the idea of a new internet. Honestly I think starting an entirely new project similar to betanet (meaning anything ranging from just Tor but different, all the way to something on a whole ass different channel, depending on legistics and things that need figuring out by someone a hell of a lot smarter than my html and basic Python having ass) sry if I’m late to the conversation.

It is interesting to see the projections people effectively state as fact. As mentioned multiple times, I think it's great that a cohesive community formed in 12 hours. Trying to branch into other projects would fragment that.
I don't know. edit: seems highly unlikely for a 17 year old to be involved in orchestrating it, if so. But maybe.
I don't know.
Probably.
The bounties literally state the languages. I saw a C lib and Nym mixnode in rust. I won't pretend to understand what each of the other bounties are even about so.. I don't know what I don't know. But at least two are nothing to do with python.
Alright that's all I had to say. I'll just leave this last bit as a reflection..
eemmmmg commentedon Aug 13, 2025
There have been crypto scams run by kids a few years younger than seventeen. A 17-year-old script kiddie is more than capable of orchestrating a crypto scam. For the record, I am a huge fan of cryptocurrencies being used as, you know, currency, but 99% of the time it's just useless garbage like this. No one has even brought up how the "federated" mints on top of BTC are a permissioned, centralized nightmare in itself, which this spec appears to be using (or, wanting to use). That's on top of Bitcoin itself being a surveillance state's dream and it being more centralized than ever (especially when 3 of the top 5 or so pools are owned by the same company).

Just Wanna point out that there are MANY examples of young adults committing sophisticated online scams, not that I think this is one of them necessarily. (Edit: I didn't read the comment immediately after lol but looks like I'm not the only one who's seen such things)
cppcooper commentedon Aug 14, 2025
True. To me I think it's unlikely for two main reasons
I'll reiterate this though, it might be; if so it'll be the biggest regret of his life presumably. Most things aren't impossible.
