Kiryu, while not trying to be a bad father outright, really had no proper father or mother figure to look up to. Therefore, he does what he thinks is parenting but ends up being selfish and not being a very good parent. Not to say he doesn't love the morning glory kids- (cont)

I think Kiryu is amazingly written, and despite my beef with him, his flaws are what make him so great. He feels so human. However, too many people glaze Kiryu instead of looking deeper and realizing that he is a deeply traumatized man himself, with flaws and habits to match.
