Unless you're being pernickety about what counts as "Sheffield ice cream", I'd recommend my own favourite - Hope Valley Ice cream, from Thorpe Farm, less than 2 miles outside the Sheffield boundary, between Stanage Edge and Hathersage. Just the thing for a reward at the end of a good walk. Generous scoops, the ice cream is less sugary than Our Cow Molly, and we can sit in the farmyard while our grandchildren look at the calves. Their flavours are less exotic than some of those listed above. They usually have a mix of "classic standards" (vanilla, chocolate, honeycomb etc), plus some more unusual flavours. And No, I have no relatiohnship with the business, and I'm not getting any commission for writing this.

I'd say that is close enough to count... will have to make a visit! Maybe I need to do a follow-up piece... (she says, hoping the editor is reading) thanks for sharing!

Sorry but I did not enjoy hope valley - ice cream was not as good as OCM and the access is a bit of a horror show - a narrow road full of bumps and potholes (this was a couple of years ago so perhaps they have improved it).

Wow, the ice cream at Pellizco sounds amazing! Especially the 2nd one- pretty different, which is always exciting. I have recently had the most chocolatey chocolate ice cream (in a tub, I felt sophisticated!) at Porter Pizza in sharrowvale, but I haven’t heard of half these other places- clearly the ice cream game is on! I once had Gorse flower flavoured ice cream on holiday and it was the best thing ever. I’ve not seen it anywhere else as yet- but I think it should be a thing!

DontShoot  4 days ago

Ooh gorse sounds good. Had geranium once. That was ace

Holly Williams   4 days ago

Gorse! That's amazing. Did it taste coconutty by any chance? I've noticed the flowers can smell a bit like coconut when they're out...

If you’re going out into the Peak District then Tagg Lane Dairy just outside Monyash is worth a detour. Gelato made from their own herd of Jersey cows.

Holly Williams   4 days ago

I actually did go to Tagg Lane, but the piece had got a bit long and they were a bit out of the bounds... but it is delicious, very rich and creamy (although using raw milk might not be for everyone!)

Can confirm that hot sauce on ice cream can be a good shout. My epiphany arrived at the Rutty, where we topped some of Rico's mini doughnuts and vanilla ice cream with Sriracha.

Not strictly Sheffield, and perhaps too mainstream for the refined Tribune taste, but the ice cream we would seek out in our younger days as an alternative to mass-market Walls or Lyons Maid was Bradwell's. Still today better than any big brand, and when served out of a café freezer rather than from a tub had that crafty rough-textured appearance.

Sad to hear of the death of Peter Wigley (it's been a bit of a week, what with Tom Lehrer and Cleo Laine as well). After its use in FM, City on the Move was much mocked, I suspect mainly by those who weren't around for its original release. That is, though, exactly what it felt like in shiny late sixties/early seventies Sheffield. The film also provides the interesting insight that the city had built 3,000 homes each year for the decade prior, 2,000 of these by the local authority. That is pretty much exactly the rate that if repeated nationally would deliver 1.5m in 5 years...

Yup. But till Right To Buy is abolished no LA dare build homes.

I am looking forward to searching out some of these ice cream suggestions, having long been a fan of Our Cow Molly lemon and ginger but ready to try some new stuff. Fennel and Pelizzco sound great.
I would also suggest to those looking for unusual flavours; Orange Bird, the South African restaurant in Hillsboro, make their own ice cream. The chocolate sorbet is amazing but the most interesting flavour I have tried is Sweetcorn, which I really enjoyed.
It doesn't hurt that the rest of their food is really good, too.

Holly Williams   4 days ago

You're right - their puds are incredible. Good shout. (and I can't believe I missed the chance to eat them and call it work...!)

Andy R  4 days ago

That sounded like a tough assignment! Thanks for stepping up :)

Snowflake, a newish concession stand in Meadowhall has lovely flavours of ice cream and sorbet which changes every few days. Theres also a snowflakedesserts in The Wicker but i have only seen this whizzing past in a taxi. Rassam's Creamery in Highfield, Spital Hill & Hillsborough, Frurt on Division St, Snowbaby Gelato next to the University, Sundaes Gelato on West St. does probably more standard flavours. Hope Valley ice cream is a bit of a stretch but worth it for the Whisky & Ginger, Pannacotta or Elderflower flavours and who can forget Granelli's the original ice-cream shop opened in Sheffield in 1874 at the bottom of Broad St and Joe's ice cream in Beighton established 1926. In fairness you should do a repeat including all options available, but probably not all on the same day 🤭. (Willing volunteer 😁). Venturing further afield Milk from the Hills farm shed near Hoylandswaine has ice cream vending machines with four standard and two special flavours each week (Bounty & White Chocolate Bueno this week). Thanks for the article I didn't know we had so many places to try ice-cream. Best get my walking boots on I'm off to try some ice-cream on a rainy day. Bliss. 😋

I need to compile a full list and start trialling them all! Late comer to icecream, only started eating it 2 years ago when had laryngitis. Now addicted.

Holly Williams   4 days ago

So many great suggestions here! All those Hope Valley flavours sound delicious, as does Bounty ice cream. And let the record show: I'm always available for further ice cream research any time, any weather...

If you like unusual icecream flavours come to NZ. Licorice (black iceacream) is my favourite.

YorkshireBorn  4 days ago

Now you're talking. Still have memories of Duck Island ice cream parlour in Hamilton, the black ice cream was quite special.

Neil  3 days ago

Our cow molly does liquorice occasionally. It’s very nice

Liz Sharp  3 days ago

Not sure Tribune expenses are likely to fund a trip to NZ!
