Azumanga was my first anime, and it had a similar effect on me.

I tried to watch Lucky Star afterwards and it just wasn't the same, I stopped after Ep. 2

to this day azumanga is the only anime that i ever watched in my life (that isn't dragon ball related since i'm an ESLmutt ARYAN o algo), i never cared for japanese animation but first time i saw it when i was 11 i really enjoyed it. i would have to rewatch it though, too busy watching fosters home for imaginary friends or some other aspie shit

One thing that might make you feel melancholic or something similar is that their school is free from NIGGERS. There are no NIGGERS in Azumanga. It depicts a NIGGER-free world. Even if someone now watching Azumanga doesn't consciously think about the lack of NIGGERS in the school, he will still notice /subconsciously/ there are no NIGGERS. This may cause melancholic feelings in the viewer because he's reminded of back when he went to school and there were no NIGGERS in the school (any Americans reading may not understand this, as NIGGERS have been a standard feature in the schools of America for many decades now).

BTW OP if you're going to read the manga then I strongly advise you to read the original version released for the West and not the new version because the new version changed the translation in such a way that it imitates the English Dub including Osaka's inappropriate southern American accent and is therefore, overall, annoying and worse. (should be said the new version fixes a few errors and bad "localization" choices in the original release like "In Osaka, do you call McDonald's Mickey-D's?" being changed into "Is it true they call McDonald's McD's in Osaka?" - but those fixes aren't important and don't make reading the new version worth it, and the new version introduces its own dumb localizations in how the characters talk like changing Tomo saying "Hey, you really wanna surprise her? Tell her how big those breasts of yours are!" into "If you really wanna shock her just tell her what size your great big honking jugs are!")

Now that you've seen the only true/pure slice-of-life type anime (as opposed to ones that aren't actually SoL or just partly SoL) worth watching, and the first such anime in the modern sense of the term (that essentially started the genre as we today think of it), it's time to watch something radically different since you're now 100% done with that type of anime — whether you've seen 15 others or 0 others, you're done once you've seen Azumanga.

Watch Ginei and City Hunter and 999 and Hokuto no Ken and Cyber City and Bebop.

i dont live in weimarica so only about 10% of the pupils in my school were niggers and they werent the primary culprit of the environment being subpar, albeit i think this was in part due to them being small in number. i dont really look back on school memories with fondness though, the feeling im trying to express is more in accordance with longing for something you never got to experience yourself, like pure and unconditional friendship and happiness

do you really think that there are no other good slice of life anime in existence? i mean sure, the genre is definitely oversaturated and has its fair share of aids like >>103201 said about lucky star (i tried watching it a few years ago and couldnt get past the first few episodes as well geg) but i find it hard to believe that azumanga is the one and only good slice of life anime ever created.

if they fit the sort of viewer experience i outlined in the OP then sure. im familiar with the names hokuto no ken and cowboy bebop, thoughbeit my knowledge of both is very limited

My first experience with azumanga was when I got into the first year of university (right before it blew up among the tranny community) and since my uni had a very strict system (you had to get up early everyday, attendance was required and the subjects were crazy hard because I was unprepared),I went through a tough time because I believed engineering  wasn't for me and that I've made a mistake so I was pretty beat down. At that time I had a friend with whom I would watch random oldGOD anime on 9anime (they already introduced the watch2gether thing) and it was pretty fun to pretend to be oldfags and whatnot. It just so happened that I watched azumanga at that particular time so I remember it fondly.

Now, regarding the anime itself, I think that people always forget how the quality of animation changed up to today and how the general mindset of older generations affected what was considered "cool" and what was not. For example, take a popular anime for around that time, that didn't have a running story, like Hellsing 2001 and Cowboy Bebop. Both were designed to be episodal anime, with both having some slight continuity within their episodes, but each episode ultimately being just "cool vampires" and "cool starships" with characters in their unique and interesting world having to solve random problems. Meanwhile, Azumanga was a rare attempt at making a comedy/slice of life when such genres were mostly magical girls and cutesy stuff, and were not mainstream in the first place. Sure, you may claim that it also falls into the cutesy category, but when I watched the movie, I failed to see any of that, except the "Chiyo-chan being cute" moments.

As I watched the 25 episodes (a bombastic amount for a comedy anime from 2002), I related to Yomi the most, in her attempts to maintain a low body fat % and just look good and healthy. I liked her character a lot, just being a down to earth girl surrounded by a bunch of airheads. There was no ecchi scenes, there was almost no lame pervert jokes that would guide a viewer away from the girls personalities and ruin what the show tried so hard to build.(Of course, we have the Kimura/Kaorin duo, but they have little to no imteraction with other characters, at least when it comes to "creepy interactions"). Surely in 1999, Japan was already plagued by the porn addiction culture it developed, yet the show remains clean, making a couple jokes in a pretty innocent way.

Despite there being no romance, no specific events that could cause proper character development, and the show mostly consisting of silly comedy sketches, you can still feel that the characters are real people, with real issues, particularly important for their age. No wonder the show survived the test of time, and I feel bad that the reward for this today, is being related to troon communities and having the characters be completely destroyed and turned into yet another bunch of self insert LGBTP+ icons…

I don't like the overanalysis but I agree for the most part. It's the most tolerable Slice of Life show out there, the rest are for gooners, trannies, or both. Ev&oe the show is pretty good some of the characters feel sort of flat at times.

The concept of "slice of life" as most people think of it – that is: an anime about a group of girls doing ordinary things and there being no overarching plot – was established by Azumanga. It did not exist prior to Azumanga. The "slice of life" animes made after Azumanga were made because of Azumanga and made in order to attempt to be the new Azumanga due to how successful Azumanga was (if Azumanga had been an abysmal financial failure then things would've been very different). They in one way or another used Azumanga as a template and formula, copying various ideas and things like character types and the setting and the themes of certain episodes. Some are extremely blatant and lazy imitations of Azumanga (like Lucky Star), and some tried to be more original but still wouldn't exist without Azumanga and despite having some originality still have things copied from Azumanga (take as an example Minami-ke made in 2007: its character named Chiaki is based on Chiyo; it's the "much younger but much smarter/wiser girl" type of character established by Azumanga's Chiyo, and there's something special about her hair that they focus on sometimes like Chiyo has her pigtails that get played with, and her name even begins with "Chi", and she serves the same kind of function or role as Chiyo does - and its character Kana is rather Tomo-like, and there's an episode involving alcohol like Azumanga's with Nyamo getting drunk, and there are other things they copied as well). And they're all trash. They're trash precisely because they were made to be the new Azumanga, made as imitations, copying and borrowing from Azumanga, and they're trash also because they're newer; they're newer so they're not as well made (anime in general made in the last 22-20 years, in the new anime era, is made with way less effort and care – in every way; in terms of animation and story writing and character writing – than anime earlier was, in the previous era that spanned from the mid 1980s until about 2003 - of course early 80s and 70s anime were also made with great care but that's another era; only comparing here the current era vs the previous one) – they're made sloppily, and since they're sloppily made in conjunction with being made from the ground up for the commercial purpose of being "moe" they're hence the very definition of moeslop – and since they're newer they suffer from that general faggyness new anime has and not only that but often they're made to appeal to trannies and fags and even promote such things (the 2007 Minami-ke, as an example again, features cross-dressing and feminization of boys). So it's all fucking cancer. Azumanga is truly the one and only "slice of life" anime that's genuinely good. As in what people normally mean with that term.

Aria (2005) is the sole exception to the above. Neither recommending it, nor saying you shouldn't watch it. Merely mentioning it because it deserves to be mentioned as it's very much "slice of life" in a similar manner to Azumanga and doesn't contain faggotry or trannyism and is basically wholesome. The problem though is Aria is best seen when you're very young or at least younger - Aria is a bit hard to watch as an adult, but you might be able to tolerate it. It's sort of like how Sailor Moon strictly objectively speaking is rather good, is well made, is a solid anime (minus the filler eps), but simultaneously one only feels "wow this is good" about it if one is a young boy.

However if you use a different definition of, and have a different mental picture of, what "slice of life" is then there are other animes that are okay. Anidb does not use "slice of life" but instead uses "daily life" which encompasses much more than the Azumanga type "slice of life" formula. And some people have that broader mental picture when they say "slice of life"… which is partially why you get some people calling Haibane Renmei "slice of life" while to many that's extremely inappropriate because it's significantly different from Azumanga-style SOL. But even with that broader definition of "slice of life", it's still inappropriate because Haibane Renmei is very plot focused. Most people who incorrectly call it "slice of life" don't do so because they're using the broader definition or have that broader mental picture of what such an anime is, but rather they call it that simply because it's about a group of girls and doesn't feature action and fighting.

If you don't use the common definition of "slice of life" established by Azumanga that includes the inane moeslop made after it and instead think of "slice of life" in the broader "daily life" manner, then probably the best non-Azumanga "slice of life" anime is Heidi made in 1974. But of course it's starkly different from Azumanga, but it's indeed "slice of life" technically (in the broader sense). So in other words the only other "slice of life" anime than Azumanga worth watching is Heidi, but keep in mind it's not the same type of SOL. Every episode has its own plot, much more so than most Azumanga-style SOL animes do, so it might not even feel like SOL at all.
