If you were Alex Hirsch and/or Rob Rezzenti, would you have taken a different direction with Ford's character? I don't exactly mean his limited limelight during the show (yeah we know he should have more moments in the show) but I mean, his characterisation, motivations etc.
not really? Ford is just too perfect a character for me to fuck with in that way, honestly. like, maybe the only thing I’d change is whatever the hell Stanchurian Candidate did with him and that stupid mind control tie. though I think Stanchurian Candidate is an outlier in that nobody except Gideon is in character for various reasons. so like, scrap Stanchurian Candidate entirely and do something with Ford that’s more than just a plot device and shows his character better than that. his characterization and motivations don’t need to change at all otherwise.
literally the only problem I have is that Ford isn’t given enough screentime to show his character and that leaves people frustrated with him because the ending ends up suffering with the Stans’ reconciliation feeling kinda rushed to some people. I think if they found some more ways to show Ford still cares about Stan earlier, even if he tries to deny it or shove it inward until the finale, people would be more understanding of his character. because he does still care about Stan despite being as angry and full of heavy baggage about him as he is. The same goes with his relationship to Mabel. I don’t need them to show it for my assurance, as I know he cares, but the fact the fandom is rife with misconceptions of who he is doesn’t come from nowhere.
Ford’s a great character that’s written really well as he is, flaws and quirks and all, and I love him to death, but I do think his character suffers when he’s not given enough time to shine. It’s frustrating to have episodes post reveal without Ford at least making an appearance (talking to you, Roadside Attraction), or without him being more than just a stupid out of character plot device. I don’t think it’s mutually exclusive to think his low screen time and his characterization are linked in some way (or at the very least, people’s perspective of his characterization). I’m glad we got the Journal and in some ways I’m also glad for TBoB (despite my reservations about the newest entry) because at least we get to see more of Ford’s perspective and voice and given more than enough reason to sympathize with him as much as we also do with Stan. I just wish that some of that was reflected better in the show, y'know?
idk, this got longer and more rambly than I was thinking it was gonna be but I hope that answers your question, anon
