It's just cheaper to use drifting joysticks and better to trick goys into buying a new controller.

Switch was rushed out to market and was released with defective controllers, but rather than fix the problem Nintendo forced people to buy new joycons. Sony and Xbox saw this and went "oh cool, free money" and decided to also sell defective controllers.
