after being aware of it for a few years but never actually watching it, I decided to try watching azumanga daioh and i must admit that the 4cuck oldfags were right, it is kino. i was initially quite dissuaded from watching it because of all the xittertrannies and normgroids who recently picked up the show and started flaunting their admiration for it at every possible turn, thoughbeit im unemployed and have nothing to do all day so i decided that i may as well at least try watching it to pass the time. now that ive finished it, i I can confidently say that out of the 15ish slice of life anime I've watched in my life, im quite sure azumanga is the best of all of them. unlike almost every shonen anime ive ever watched where i felt like i had to grit my teeth and force myself to watch it, i found myself actively rationing out the episodes of azumanga instead of just rushing through them to get through to the end as quickly as possible because i wanted to savour and really engage with every moment of the show. for only 26 episodes I was honestly surprised with how much attachment I could build to these characters and how much i could grow to like them, even if i didnt care for them initially. I think this sentiment is most exemplified with chiyo, who i hated at the beginning of the show for her high pitched voice and over the top demeanor which i found to be incredibly grating thoughever by the time the graduation scene rolled around i had built a genuine appreciation for her character, and i felt that i could almost relate to her because of how sombre it was to see all of the characters move on with their lives and for the show to conclude, but i knew that it was necessary. if azumanga was some thrembillion episode long goyslop gag show like the simpsons or family guy then it wouldnt have the quality or temporal nature that made it special in the first place.

It's sort of hard to put my finger on it, but azumanga feels very different to almost every slice of life anime ive ever heard of or seen before despite being seemingly quite generic in concept. one significant thing it accomplished that not many anime, or really tv shows in general have ever done for me was actually making me feel melancholic, thoughbeit simultaneously happy in a way. seeing all these fictional anime foids having purer and more true friendships in a total 9 hours of runtime than i have in my entire life was in part brutal, yes, but the fact that they get to exist in a good world full of camaraderie, kindness and joy, even if it doesn't exist outside of the pages of a manga or the pixels of a screen is something they deserve. i know that shows of this quality are few and far between and that some people on this board recommend watching haibane renmei as a sort of successor to azumanga, but i would like to know, have any /a/ryanime enjoyers had similar experiences with azumanga daioh, or any other keyed anime for that matter? im not just asking for generic recommendations like the other 4 threads with the exact same topic but anime that actually provoke a deeper level of feeling and appreciation for the media in question. This may sound hyperbolic, but i do really mean it when I say azumanga made me feel a sort of happiness and empathy I haven't felt in a long time, so i humbly thank whatever chink animator toiled over his pen, paper or computer to make it happen

Good essay, OP.

Azumanga was my first anime, and it had a similar effect on me.

I tried to watch Lucky Star afterwards and it just wasn't the same, I stopped after Ep. 2

Azumanga WABAG fact

One thing that might make you feel melancholic or something similar is that their school is free from NIGGERS. There are no NIGGERS in Azumanga. It depicts a NIGGER-free world. Even if someone now watching Azumanga doesn't consciously think about the lack of NIGGERS in the school, he will still notice /subconsciously/ there are no NIGGERS. This may cause melancholic feelings in the viewer because he's reminded of back when he went to school and there were no NIGGERS in the school (any Americans reading may not understand this, as NIGGERS have been a standard feature in the schools of America for many decades now).

BTW OP if you're going to read the manga then I strongly advise you to read the original version released for the West and not the new version because the new version changed the translation in such a way that it imitates the English Dub including Osaka's inappropriate southern American accent and is therefore, overall, annoying and worse. Here is a rar with the original release: https://web.archive.org/web/20250729132641/https://litter.catbox.moe/etvwb7aa02tf9gnk.rar ← hard to find nowadays, you should btw read it and all other manga using this comic reader as it's by far the best one: https://mangameeya.en.softonic.com/ (if you dislike the way it behaves in some manner then you can change that behavior, it's very customizable, you can change what keys do what etc, I even once controlled it via a DualShock 2 of all things)

(should be said the new version fixes a few errors and bad "localization" choices in the original release like "In Osaka, do you call McDonald's Mickey-D's?" being changed into "Is it true they call McDonald's McD's in Osaka?" - but those fixes aren't important and don't make reading the new version worth it, and the new version introduces its own dumb localizations in how the characters talk like changing Tomo saying "Hey, you really wanna surprise her? Tell her how big those breasts of yours are!" into "If you really wanna shock her just tell her what size your great big honking jugs are!")

Now that you've seen the only true/pure slice-of-life type anime (as opposed to ones that aren't actually SoL or just partly SoL) worth watching, and the first such anime in the modern sense of the term (that essentially started the genre as we today think of it), it's time to watch something radically different since you're now 100% done with that type of anime — whether you've seen 15 others or 0 others, you're done once you've seen Azumanga.

Watch Ginei and City Hunter and 999 and Hokuto no Ken and Cyber City and Bebop.

>This may cause melancholic feelings in the viewer because he's reminded of back when he went to school and there were no NIGGERS in the school
i dont live in weimarica so only about 10% of the pupils in my school were niggers and they werent the primary culprit of the environment being subpar, albeit i think this was in part due to them being small in number. i dont really look back on school memories with fondness though, the feeling im trying to express is more in accordance with longing for something you never got to experience yourself, like pure and unconditional friendship and happiness
>BTW OP if you're going to read the manga then I strongly advise you to read the original version
i havent read manga in a while, but now that youre mentioning it i think i might check this out o algo

do you really think that there are no other good slice of life anime in existence? i mean sure, the genre is definitely oversaturated and has its fair share of aids like >>103201 said about lucky star (i tried watching it a few years ago and couldnt get past the first few episodes as well geg) but i find it hard to believe that azumanga is the one and only good slice of life anime ever created.
>Watch Ginei and City Hunter and 999 and Hokuto no Ken and Cyber City and Bebop.
if they fit the sort of viewer experience i outlined in the OP then sure. im familiar with the names hokuto no ken and cowboy bebop, thoughbeit my knowledge of both is very limited
