How does age verification work?
If you are based in a location where regulations require a minimum age to access restricted content, Reddit will ask you to enter your birthdate when attempting to access this content. You then will be asked to verify your birthdate through a third-party identity verification provider (such as Persona). This is often achieved by sending a photo of a government ID or taking a selfie. Reddit will not have access to this photographic information.
Once you are verified as above the minimum age required by law, you’ll be able to access the restricted content. If your verification isn’t successful, you’ll have multiple opportunities to resubmit your information. Please refer to these FAQs before reporting any issues.
What kinds of content will require verification?
If you are in the UK, please see our Online Safety Act for UK Users help center article to learn more about the kinds of content that are restricted. This may include communities or content labeled Not Safe For Work (NSFW) or communities that are devoted to certain mature themes (for example, alcohol or gambling).
If you are below the minimum age to access restricted content, you are not permitted to moderate communities that are dedicated to NSFW or mature content. Currently, anonymous browsing may be impacted if you’re in the UK.
How can I manage my age information?
If you provide your birthdate, whether optionally at account creation / account settings, or as part of the age verification process (where required), you can view this information in your account settings. Account holders under the age of 13 are not permitted under Reddit’s User Agreement and their accounts will automatically be deleted per our existing policies. Please note that you can only input your age in your account settings once (if you make a mistake please review this guidance before filing a report.
How will Reddit use my age information?
Your birthdate is used to verify that you are of the minimum age to access certain restricted content on Reddit. It will also be used to ensure an appropriate ads experience for users, including disabling ads personalization and limiting ads in sensitive categories (for example, alcohol or gambling) for those under 18. Additionally, if you are below the minimum age to access restricted content, you are not permitted to moderate communities that are dedicated to NSFW or mature content.
Following verification by a trusted third-party identity verification provider, Reddit will securely store only your verified age information consisting of your birthdate and verification status (not the verification / photographic materials) in your account so that you do not have to enter it each time you attempt to access age-gated content in the future. Verified age information will not be visible to other users or advertisers, and will be used to enhance content relevance and ad experiences, as outlined in our Privacy Policy. We do not sell your personal data to third parties, including data brokers.
Visit our identity verification provider’s Privacy Policy to learn how they process your personal information.
How can I change my age information?
You’ll only be able to input age into your account settings one time. If you made a mistake with inputting your birthdate and want to correct it, please review these FAQs before submitting your report. If you do this, you may need to re-initiate the age verification process to access restricted content.
