When Buffalo Bill Cody's horse is stolen, the star of the world's foremost wild west show travels to Baker Street to consult the star of the world's foremost consulting detective agency. Like many before him, Colonel Cody takes Sherlock Holmes to be that star. The true sage of 221B Baker Street, who also serves as its landlady, takes control of the situation, and finds both the purloined animal and the two children who had taken the horse for a joy ride 1903 style. When their father is murdered weeks later, the children fear they will be blamed because of their quarrel with him. They run away to join the wild west show leading Colonel Cody to make a return visit to Baker Street-this time with the two children in tow, and to enlist Holmes in the search for a murderer. Mrs. Hudson, will, of course, once again take charge, once again without acknowledgement of her contribution, once again maintaining the fiction of Sherlock Holmes's leadership, an essential pretense in the male dominated world of Victorian England. As Mrs. Hudson and her colleagues work to discover the murderer, they will find themselves having to counter an anti-Indian bigotry that places at risk the marriage of friends of Mrs. Hudson's from the wild west show, and Mrs. Hudson's very life. With the help of her two young horse thieves, now happily rehabilitated, Mrs. Hudson may yet find the way to a just and rewarding outcome.

Editorial Reviews

Review

" ... 'Mrs. Hudson and the Wild West' should make ideal summer reading....Brown's novels have ... perfected a version of Doyle's quasi-Victorian narration that doesn't tax modern readers. Light, swifft and with underlying humor, they make one long to huzzah and call, "God Save the Queen!" - Wilmington StarNews

" ... 'Mrs. Hudson and the Wild West' ... is the seventh offering in the amusingly quirky Mrs. Hudson of Baker Street series in which the formidable landlady proves to be the sage of Baker Street. ... And she still finds the time to make scones (plain and raisin-filled)." --
The District Messenger - Newsletter of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London

Barry S Brown prepared himself for the challenging task of correcting a century of misinformation about Mrs. Hudson and events at 221B Baker Street by pursuing a research career in the fields of mental health, criminology and drug abuse. In that capacity he edited two works of non-fiction and more than 150 articles and chapters. More significantly, he developed the deductive skills needed to establish Mrs. Hudson's role as the true sage of Baker Street who provided free lodging to the sometime chemist, Sherlock Holmes, in exchange for his willingness to become the male figurehead essential to starting a business in Victorian England. In four books and counting, Mrs. Hudson has led Holmes, and his earnest companion and fellow lodger, Dr. Watson, on a series of adventures taking them from London's East End to England's country estates, and across the Atlantic to New York City. Along the way they sometimes join forces, sometimes cross swords with a diverse set of characters including Lily Langtry, Samuel Clemens, Charles Stewart Parnell, and the man known as the White Rajah of Sarawak. While the stories are told with tongue firmly in cheek, a close eye is paid to historic accuracy in terms of events of the last decade of the 19th century, and the real people who were a part of those events. For those who wish to meet the author, he can be found wandering the streets of Carolina Beach in North Carolina wearing a cape and deerstalker hat, exciting frequent curiosity and occasional police inquiry.

Another terrific installation in Dr. Brown’s Mrs. Hudson series. I admire the author’s ability to uphold the novel premise of these stories without creating caricatures of Holmes and Watson. In Mrs. Hudson and The Wild West, he maintains this delicate balance throughout the investigation with the occasional subtle (and painfully funny) reminders of who is really in charge. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud; his wives--Louis and Jean--prouder.

If you like Sherlock Holmes, it doesn't get better than this.

Having read and enjoyed an earlier entry in Barry Brown’s Mrs. Hudson series (Mrs. Hudson in New York), I was glad to return to his amusing reinterpretation of the Canon. New readers will learn at once that Holmes’s landlady (trained by her late husband) is actually in charge of the Baker Street detective agency. The title of this seventh book implies no journey to America; rather, in 1903 Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show comes to London. The initial case—the theft of Cody’s stallion—is quickly dealt with, but it leads the detective trio into a convoluted family mystery that spans three generations and requires the balance of the book to solve. The Wild West show stays mostly in the background, save for a star-crossed romance between two of its employees whose difficulties Mrs. Hudson efficiently resolves. Along the way, Mr. Brown presents a varied cast of entertaining characters, offers several red herrings, and even takes his readers on A Trip to the Moon. Mrs. Hudson finds time, while directing her less accomplished minions, to bake a cornucopia of scones. Actually, the agency’s detective work is more evenly divided than I had remembered; Holmes and Watson seem very like the characters Conan Doyle depicted. The book’s ending defers to the traditional Sherlockian timeline. After the case is successfully concluded, Mrs. Hudson hints that she is ready to “step back” and allow her partners more autonomy—only to be told by Holmes that he wishes to retire to beekeeping. Dr. Watson speaks for The Strand’s readers (and, I am sure, for Barry Brown’s) in urging his friend to defer, if not reconsider, this decision. As with all well-done pastiches, I don’t want to see these end!

The seventh in a series, Mrs. Hudson and the Wild West, is a classic murder-mystery story by Barry Brown and a thorough enjoyment to read. The tale gradually unfolds and fully resolves in a satisfying conclusion. It contains the author’s well-honed penchants for precise language, lively dialogue, understanding of human behavior – criminal and otherwise-, clever humor, depiction of social mores, social consciousness and fondness for scones. The role of the housekeeper in the investigations is especially alluring. This appealing novel leaves the reader entertained and content with regard to the murder but wondering about the future of this sensational team of detectives. Stay tuned!
