Purchase options and add-ons
How often have you looked up an English word in a German dictionary only to be confronted by a bewildering array of German equivalents? Which is the correct word for the context in question? Thirty years' experience in teaching Germanic languages at tertiary level to English-speaking students have made the author acutely aware of this problem. Mastering German Vocabulary explains how to use over 2,200 common German words correctly, using example sentences in German with English translations.
In order to aid quick consultation, all German and English words are listed in separate indexes. The book is designed for all upper secondary and tertiary students of German and complements Routledge's grammar, dictionary and vocabulary building textbooks. It is a practical companion for anyone serious about perfecting their German.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2012I've been taking an informal advanced conversational German course for several years now and have tried a number of advanced German books. It's as if Bruce Donaldson attended our lessons, heard what our weaknesses were, and wrote this book to address them. This is THE most concise, practical and applicable advanced German book I've yet to encounter.
While the book might have a few minor loose ends (e.g., I was surprised not to see einkaufen and um/ueberarbeiten mentioned under their respective verbs. Some of the explanations could be a bit more terse - like beibringen could better be described as "teaching one the ropes"...); but these loose ends are very minor in comparison to what the author has done in thinking about and assembling the common stumbling blocks that non native speakers at an advanced level are likely to encounter. I've just been through my first read of the book. There's very little unused "fluff" in this book. 95% of it is what a decent foreign speaker of German should know. Naturally, it would be difficult to outright memorize this quantity of information, so I fully intend to reread this book at least two more times. If you're at my level of German, this book is among the best I've found anywhere, and well worth the price.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2014This is a great book to purchase once you've progressed some distance into learning--or re-learning German. It clearly explains the differences between two or three words that someone just learning German might think to be synonyms, but really aren't. By knowing the differences, your German will be much more credible when speaking or writing. For example, in German there are several verbs that translate as "to know." The book explains that one of them means to absolutely know a fact, another means that you "believe" something to be fact and the third is to know--as in be acquainted with--a person. Another example: There are two words for "now." One means RIGHT now, and the other, a more general use of now. I've used a number of German language books and CDs and none of them spell out these nuances like Donaldson's book. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2010Mastering german Vocabulary is a much needed book in that it collates German words that have similar meanings and shows in what specific situations each should be used.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2008This book is not for beginners. It is excellent for anyone who has a high-intermediate or better command of German. This is because it deals with the subtleties of German vocabulary, explaining the nuances among seemingly synonymous words. For example, in English, try to think of how you would explain to someone the differences between "to use," "to make use of," "to employ," "to utilize," and "to apply," when all of them could be grouped under the verb "use." I recommend the book whole-heartedly for those who want to perfect their idiomatic command of the language.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2014Excellent book for anyone learning German. If you have ever used an English to German dictionary and you look up a word and get 5 or 6 german words and you don't know which one to use, this book explains the small differences between the words where the dictionary does not.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2010First off, the the book itself, that is the scholarly content, is excellent and certainly would be a help, in my opinion, especially for intermediate and above level German students. I purchased this book a few years back and it was so dog-eared and marked I decided to order a second copy. It's the same book as before but it is a formatting disaster. My older copy had two columns thoughout. Each concept has an easily readable heading - in short it's relatively easy to navigate. This newest copy is an utter monstrosity. Page after page ot text that runs together with no thought given to headings or readability. It's an instant headache producer. And think you can go in the back and find the page number in the index? No, no, no, no. There is an index but only by the word itself with no information as to what page it can be found. So everytime you want to find a word grouping, you have to slog through this mess to locate it. So what happened? Well in the front of the book it says that this newer text was "digitized". What that means I'm not sure - OCR'd? Processed for Kindle? Who knows? The amazing thing (laughable if it wasn't so sad) is that the newer version is 60 pages longer that the original. Huh? So it's not like somebody is trying to save paper costs. They're actually slaughtering more trees to produce a book that borders on the unreadable. Routledge, this is a disgrace and an insult to your customers. You need to locate the problem and get on top of it. Something is seriously wrong.............................
P.S. Try to find an older copy with the original formatting. You'll be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is definitely the best German vocabulary book I have come across. It is a condensed version of A Practical Dictionary of German Usage (ISBN 0198240023) which is 10 times bigger but also 10 times more expensive. Also because A Practical... has not been reviewed since mid-90's, Mastering German Vocabulary is probably the most up-to-date of its category. Comparable to Using German... series (especially Using German Synonyms).

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful for learners of different levels
Very useful reference book for troublesome groups of words and for finding the right expression. I benefited from it starting from level A1.
