Czech PM Petr Fiala’s cabinet has rejected Beijing-based
Emposat’s plan to construct and operate a satellite ground station with a 7.3-meter-diameter parabolic antenna in the municipality of Vlkoš in South Moravia due to national security and espionage concerns.
Although the antenna has already been installed,
Emposat will now have to remove it. The Chinese company reportedly acquired the site through Czech company Pekasat, which had been building its own satellite ground station.
Emposat’s operations in the Czech Republic are mediated by their Prague lawyer Pavlína Vanická, who reportedly specializes in Czech-Chinese business transactions.
Pekasat claims on its website that last year it concluded a memorandum of cooperation with the Azerbaijani space agency Azercosmos, which, in turn, works closely with
Emposat.
