ANTONIO AMAYA
Panama's 6-time featherweight champion boxer is shown in his trunks
with his fists up (4x7). Signed twice!
Inscribed photograph signed twice: "Antonio Amaya" and on
verso, "[in Spanish, translated]For my/friend/Ramon Jones/Antonio
Amaya/Conference Champion Panama/10.17.63", in blue ink. B/w, 4x7. Captioned
sticker attached at lower margin (2 surfaces). Antonio Amaya (b.1945)
went undefeated for three straight seasons after his boxing debut in
1963. A winner of 6 Panamanian featherweight titles, Amaya saw his first
loss in 1966 in a bout with Freddie Rengifo who narrowly defeated him in points.
After 1968 Amaya went international to Japan and lost his first title fight to
Hiroshi Kobayashi in the WBA World super featherweight finals. In 1970
Kobayshi defeated him a second time. Another lost title fight in 1974 proved his
failing Japanese boxing career, so Amaya returned to Panama in 1978 after brief
stints in Colombia, Ecuador and South Africa. That year he battled Jose Salazar
in his final championship fight, defeating him in unanimous decision. He
became the Panamanian light welterweight champion, finishing with a record
of 47-21-7. Captioned sticker attached at lower margin (2 surfaces). Lightly
bowed. Minor surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
