That's a beautiful example of how correlation does not imply causation
56
Finding out that "common knowledge" isn't nearly as common as you thought is always a weird experience...
449
The northerners being more prone to this than southerners defies stereotypes.
223
Well.., "cure for blindness" must be next..
126
Their eyes hurt just before they could witness the eclipse, what a coincidence.
133
Southwest Texas apparently either doesn't care why their eyes hurt, already knows, or isn't Googling it
57
People missing science classes be like
3
Them: You are just a dumb hillbilly from Northeast Tennessee. Me: Yeah, well, I knew better than to look at the sun during the eclipse.
39
I remember in the height of the pandemic I would go on Amazon. The candle reviews had a lot of 1 star reviews stating there was no scent!
americans do what you warn them not to do
2
2nd most searched "sun looks funny"
36
I don't see the correlation
11
"looking at sun good or bad"
33
Experimenters be experimenting.

You can't make this up anymore. Bill Nye is disappointed in us for sure

😂

Though to be fair, are these exclusively the numbers for "eyes hurt", or are these numbers including all searches that contain such and synonyms/variations (the way Google determines relevant results to your search), e.g. "how to watch solar eclipse not hurt eyes"
1
Ah data, you never fail to impress

The eclipse knew...
15
And the rest of us stared directly at the uncovered sun with no issues.
5
Well, this correlation is not conclusive. We should confirm the causation. 🥴
11
How do ya access that info what's the prompt show high volume areas for this phrase in America
This is exactly why science is important, people
1
It's always funny to see people totally misunderstand a chart. 😂. You people need to read and think.
No way 😂
Wait a minute, Southeast California/Southwest Arizona, and the Florida/Arizona/Georgia connection, what are you people doing? You're not anywhere near the eclipse path
What are the units of “Google search volume”?
Who didn't see that coming?
Tf was goin on in arizona
Wasn't it a fake meme map?
2
okay but why is this map broken down by congresssional district
I made a pinhole projection so I could see it on my wall
"Coincidence? I THINK NOT!"
1
I never got this. Is an eclypse especially hurtfull to your eyes since they were adjusted to the dark before the sun comes through again? Because I can look at the regular sun a bit and don't just go blind.
Some people can't read I've noticed in these comments Or don't know what a week is who knows.
I thought most people in the eclipse path had cloudy weather? It's the old meme of "everytime celestial event happens, it's cloudy/rainy" It was cloudy where I was, but I still managed to witness totality when the clouds broke at the last second
I mean... Lol

Correlation isn't causation. Oh well...nevermind.
I'm not surprised, SMH 😔
