CANTON— A Chinese national who allegedly stole $42,000 from a St. Lawrence County resident was arrested for grand larceny Monday.
Jian Chen, 35, of Brooklyn, was charged July 7 with third-degree grand larceny, according to a statement released Tuesday by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Chen was charged following investigation of a fraud case involving individuals claiming to be U.S. Marshals in order to obtain large amounts of currency through deception.
Chen is alleged to have traveled to St. Lawrence County on May 15 to retrieve the money and was arrested July 7 in Brooklyn by NYPD detectives and Homeland Security Investigators and on a St. Lawrence County warrant.
Detectives brought Chen back to St. Lawrence County July 7. He was arraigned in St. Lawrence County Court July 8 before Justice Storie and was released on his own recognizance.
Chen was later apprehended by Massena-based Homeland Security investigators for alleged immigration violations.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Canton Police Department, New York State Police, Ogdensburg Police, St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office, United States Border Patrol, Department of Homeland Security Investigations and the New York City Police Department.
