It's one thing to make a shitpost making fun of someone, but it's really weird when people actually ruin their lives with long prison sentences in the name of messing with someone. It's like wow, you sure showed him by going to jail for 8 years.

The Japanese internet is the epitome of "taking things too far." The lawyer was a ignorant idiot, but he didn't deserve years of harassment. To be honest, he made the best of the situation. I imagine others may have committed "non-ceremonial seppuku" under such pressure.

It's probably true, though, that he depended on his father's financial resources for almost everything in his life. I've also seen rumors that his father was paying rent for the space Karasawa's law firm occupied, but I haven't confirmed this.

In Russia, we have such definition as "lower Internet", which includes some marginalized yet quite famous Internet-celebrities. Incels, alcoholics, junkies, perverts, borderline-insane or retarded people - that kind of men. And one of the integral part of this thing is that most of them contacted each other in most unexpected ways, which builds a complicated social network and makes all the crazy stuff squared. AND SOMEHOW IT WORKS EXACTLY THE SAME IN JAPAN

I feel bad for the lawyer. Imagine if all of those people used that energy to do something that helped the world or society, instead of trying to ruin some random idiot lawyer's life. The internet is a pandora's box at best, and that's solely because of the nature of the people who use it.

Honestly props to the lawyer for making the best use of the situation and instead of hiding himself more which would've been futile, he accepted it to some degree and reached some pretty high places thanks to it. It's also very Japanese of the 2chan users to turn their harassment into something that's seemingly more positive with their undying cult-like devotion to this man.

In Germany we have/had a similar case called "Drachenlord". Thought a phenomenon like that is pretty unique but I guess it happens all over the world.
