a A A A A 6 Part VI Thursday, February 4, 1982 Los Angeles Times JAZZ-DISCO DANCE AT ACADEMY WEST lake four jazz and disco dance choreographers, an 1 enthusiastic conditions audience at and the Academy cramped West dance- studio watching theater and what do you get? On Sunday night at least, the formula yielded "Another Pauze for Dance," a concert resembling nothing so much as a variety showing playing to eager patrons. Produced by Lloyd Pauze, this program made no pretense of carefully structuring a chohesive theatrical event. Each choreographer went his own way. Pauze tried to dazzle viewers with frenzied disco strutting in the group work "Dream Machine," performed by his company, Lloyd Pauze and Dancers. Another company work, "La Cantina," fared betterat least here Pauze seized on a saloon setting to loosely link dances by cowboys, sailors, assorted womenfolk, couples and a lyrical dream duet for himself and jiving Shirley Kirkes.
Kirkes choreographed the section "Shirley's Place" in "La Cantina," using her own sensual appeal as a performer to animate the hackneyed story of a good -time girl finagling a valuable ring from a hapless sailor. David Rodriguez's sextet Fusion" tried to combine Oriental atmosphere with Western jazz dancbut succeeded only in trivializing the use of timehonored Asian props: dance fans and ribbon streamers. This work used novice as well as experienced dancers, however, and gained much of its small charm from their ingenuous approach. Ably danced works created by Tam Greenough- -Warner completed the variety show profile Saturday night, showing happy hobos playing on "The Sunny Side of the Street" and two magicians sawing apart their female assistants in "Two Plus Two." These and other works presented carved out no new themes to be expressed or new ways of moving, all too common failings seen in jazz and disco choreographies mistakenly presented as concert -level material. -LINDA TOMKO TENOR MICHAEL BALLAM IN RECITAL By DANIEL CARIAGA, Times Staff Writer oung artists need, more than anything else, the ing chance to introductory peform," remarks Roberta at the Peters opening noted event durin the Bolla Young Artist Series, Monday night in the Mark Taper Forum at the Music Center.
Such chances are being given three rising young musicians this season in the series' five-city, 15-recital inaugural tour. Tenor Michael Ballam began the local presentations Monday; he was introduced by Peters, who serves as cultural adviser to the series. Ballam, pianist Janina Fialkowska and cellist William De Rosa will also appear in Boston, Houston, Chicago and Washington, D.C. In the dry acoustical ambiance of the Taper, Ballam was at a disadvantage, and some of his singing appeared colorless. What could not be missed in his recital was an abundance of intensity, intelligence and musicality, as well as a personable stage manner and a strong ability to communicate.
Ballam's generous program, offering no fewer than 26 songs before encores, may have been self-defeating, however; though its total length proved not inordinate, such a succession of musical vignettes often seems to wear out attentive listeners. PAC-MAN'S GRIN Continued from First Page yellow dots on the video screen, she rewards you with a three-act cartoon. Video novices beware- -you have to continually beat the game to see each new episode. Like Hollywood lovers of yore, Mr. and Ms.
Pac-Man meet and fall in love in the first -act cartoon, chase each other across the screen in the second, and for the finale, entitled "Junior," a stork presents the happy family with a Pac-Baby. Is it a boy or a girl? Ah, that's a question that can't be answered- -yet. Not even with a fat roll of quarters and a fast set of fingers. Sam Vaughan, who runs the vast Doubleday publishing operation, was saying that in certain i instances the company was no longer running the price of the book in its ads, figuring that there is no point turning off the prospective buyer -reader before he or she has hefted the book, anyway. Given the pressure on retail prices now being applied by discounters like Crown and Barnes Noble, Vaughan thinks that the publishers might well consider a socalled net pricing system in which the retailer would, in effect, set the price his traffic would bear.
What seems true for books as for films is that the recessional squeeze gets tougher on discretionary spend-! ing. The paperback looks better than the hardcover (except when the urge to read is irresistible), and the subsequent run appears as inviting as the first run in Westwood. Anxieties run deep, also on both coasts is it they want?" is a sort of leitmotif). But the concern from Vaughan and other editors is special and, in its ironic way, heartening. The worry is not that nothing will sell but that it grows more difficult to publish those worksthe poems, the first novels, the scholarship and the urgent essays -that feed the pride and enrich the culture if not, alas, always the exchequer.
It is the difference between plotting the bad but commercial movie and the aspiring and offbeat work that might, with luck and a favoring wind, triumphantly break even. On the day before I left, a pothole a yard wide opened up in the West Side Highway which, being elevated, meant that the pothole was, fancifully speaking, 30 feet deep. Traffic was clotted in -Sigalert proportions. A cabdriver who escaped the mess said, "Finey, I says, 'Lady, you better get out and walk. There's eight bucks on the meter and we ain't goin' no But I mean, only in New York City, right? Where else could you fall through a highway?" He sounded disgusted and proud, both.

14 MUSIC. CENTER What he sang best, the 30-year-old tenor performed most convincingly. He brought textual detail and musical line to the first seven lieder of Robert Schumann's "Dichterliebe." He showed controlled ardor in Richard Strauss' "Staendchen." He displayed an Italianate ring in the climaxes to Liszt's "'Oh! quand je dors," a group of English folksong settings by Benjamin Britten and his closing group of Italian ditties, ending with "Core 'ngrato." But he warmed up slowly. The opening group, a selection of six of Britten's Purcell realizations, proved intermittently scratchy and tentative, as did some later items on the program. Singers, even more than other performing musicians, are at the mercy of the rooms they sing in.
At the piano, J. Anthony Strong showed promise and inconsistency, an irritating combination; at this point in his career, Ballam needs partnership of a higher order. SCULPTOR RECEIVES $5,000 RESALE FEE an Francisco sculptor Ruth Asawa has received what may be the largest payment yet made under California's 5-year-old Resale Royalties Act. Asawa told The Times she got $5,000 after the recent sale of San Francisco's Ghirardelli Square. Asawa's fountain, "Andrea," was commissioned for Ghirardelli Square in 1966 and completed in 1968 for $20,000, she said.
When the project was sold recently, an independent art appraiser valued the fountain at 000, and Asawa received the of the sale price due her under the law. First in the nation, the Resale Royalties Act has long been enmeshed in controversy and court challenges, and nobody knows how many artists have received royalties. The legislation's author Sen. Alan Sieroty (D- West Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley) praised the Asawa payment, and said he has been meeting with art dealers and artists to discuss possible amendments to the law. -BARBARA ISENBERG NU MOOVEEZ HOLLYWOOD'S ALTERNATIVE THE LOS ANGELES TIMES: most entertaining and expertly crafted selections of short films."
