This is the next little hand made book I wrote & illustrated. It’s for my son, who was fascinated by insects & creeping crawling things. Woodlice have so many different colloquial names that I’m sure I could add many more to it in a finished edition. Sound up full & apologies for whispering

Good morning from Northern Maine, where we're having a stretch of remarkable weather. Currently 59° F, light winds, mostly clear skies. We've got an arborist coming today to remove several mature trees at Mom's. Very sad, but they've become unpredictable and unsafe.
Brilliant sunrise - the foreground is in shadow, the hillside is silhouetted, and clouds are hot pink, purple, and lavender.

GOOD NEWS: Lead shot will be banned! RESULT! After years of campaigning, the use of toxic lead ammunition by the shooting industry will be banned. This is excellent news for people's health and for wildlife. Read the Defra press release here: wildjustice.org.uk/general/toxi...
Quote from Chris Packham: “In pipes, paint and petrol, we said goodbye to lead poisoning in humans years ago. But down to the cruel belligerence of the shooting industry, which ironically and pathetically postures as pro-conservation, 100 thousand wild birds a year have been dying through the accidental ingestion of lead shot. I don’t call that conservation, I call it a colossal, wilful waste of wildlife. Top work from Steve Reed and Emma Hardy - thank you.”

In a letter drawn from a posthumous collection of correspondence, published in 2019, the neurologist Oliver Sacks argued that society had no immunity to the seductions of digital life. “What we are seeing—and bringing on ourselves—resembles a neurological catastrophe on a gigantic scale,” he wrote.

“But Susan, why can’t you just leave your dog with pet sitters?” My smallest dog, Chloe, live the first two years of her life in a cage. She never saw the sky or knew what it was like to be touched until she was rescued. As a result, she’s a little broken.

Canon SX60 HS (long gone, but I loved it when I had it), f/5.6, 1/400, ISO-125, 184mm. This was the last camera I had before biting the bullet and switching to a Sony mirrorless camera and interchangeable lenses. NEVER regretted it! My photography improved a thousand percent. If reant wasn't a necessity, I'd upgrade to the Sony a6600. Ya gotta have something to wish for!

Quiet countryside afternoons are magical. 🍃
Traditional art, a sketchbook page with two loose photo studies done in markers and colored pencil. Both pictures depict the countryside, the first drawing shows a few old houses by a path under golden trees, and the second drawing shows two cottages by a lake. There’s a flower ornament in the middle of the page, separating the two pictures.

Scientists have long insisted that we can and must limit global warming to 1.5 degrees—a grim milestone one activist group calls a “point of no return.” But one problem with points of no return is that they don’t tell you much about what comes afterward.

Federal kindergarten vaccination data shows national rates for four major vaccines, which had held steady before the COVID-19 pandemic, have fallen significantly since. In fact, measles vaccination rates were below herd immunity in most states in 2023. ➡️ Read more: propub.li/40KnM8n
A U.S. tile map that depicts the measles vaccination rate for kindergarteners (according to CDC data) in each state from 2013 to 2023. A key explains that for each state, a gray dotted line represents the benchmark for herd immunity: a 95% vaccination rate. Vaccination rates above 95% are shown in blue, while vaccination rates below 95% are shown in orange. Looking at the full map, the trend lines lean much more orange than blue. Measles vaccination rates in most states were below herd immunity in school year 2023-2024.
