Test flight report of JAL's new aircraft, AIRBUS A350. For business trips and family trips. We have collected real customer feedback.

Airbus' new aircraft, the A350, has entered service on some flights between Haneda and Fukuoka. The A350 is JAL's flagship aircraft for a new era, and will make air travel even more comfortable. To get a concrete idea of what kind of experience it will provide, we asked business travelers and families with children to try it out.

"It's very spacious. The lighting is calm and comfortable."

Image 1: "It's so spacious. The lighting is calm and comfortable."

The first person to try out the new Class J was Tsuyoshi Otsuka, president of Nippon Design. In addition to being active in a wide range of areas, including designing for local communities, he also runs the "Little Fukuoka" community of Fukuoka residents in Tokyo, and says he returns to his hometown of Fukuoka at least once a month.

Image 2: "It's so spacious. The lighting is calm and comfortable."

"The cabin is very spacious. Because of my job, I'm drawn to design, but because it's a cutting-edge aircraft, they don't use unusual lighting colors to create a futuristic feel. I like the overall chic atmosphere. The walls appear to be made of resin, but they have a wallpaper-like texture, which makes them very relaxing."
The interior design was commissioned to the British company Tangerine, and was created with a theme of traditional Japanese beauty. The train has 369 seats in three classes, creating a spacious space. The windows are also larger than usual, which should give the passengers a feeling of openness.

"The seat has just the right firmness."

"I also liked the seats. They are just the right amount of firmness to support your body, so you don't get tired easily. The seats are wide and there is plenty of leg room. I usually sit in regular seats, but I would definitely choose these. They are comfortable enough that you don't even need to recline, but I think if I reclined a bit I would be able to sleep well."

Image: "The seat has just the right firmness."

The seats in Class J and standard seats are newly developed by Recaro, a German company famous for its sports car seats. They are designed to be comfortable, and also feature leg rests that can be adjusted precisely. The seats are also arranged with a seat pitch of about 97cm front to back, which is about 18cm wider than standard seats. With plenty of personal space, Otsuka says, "I feel like I'll be able to get work done."

"A surprisingly useful cocktail tray. Very handy when you're at work."

Image 1: "An unexpectedly useful cocktail tray. Very handy for when you're working."

"When you spread out your documents on the plane, it can be hard to find a place to put your drink, so the cocktail tray is very convenient. There's also an AC power outlet at your feet, and a USB port under the monitor, so you can charge your PC and smartphone at the same time. This is quite important, isn't it?"

Image 2: "An unexpectedly useful cocktail tray. Very handy for when you're working."

"I also really appreciate that there are reading lights in addition to the spotlights. I also like how the brightness can be adjusted."

AC power outlets and USB ports are standard equipment in all seats, including economy class seats.Free Wi-Fi is also available on board, so you can connect to the Internet as soon as the plane starts taking off.

"It's really quiet. There's very little vibration or noise during takeoff, so it doesn't get in the way of my work. If I was seated close to the engines during the flight, the sound of the turbines turning would be annoying, but that doesn't happen here. The toilets are also spacious and clean."

Image 3: "An unexpectedly useful cocktail tray. Very handy for when you're working."

"If I could choose my flight schedule, I would definitely use it," he said, appearing to be very satisfied with the A350.

"For a domestic flight, the storage space is surprisingly spacious!"

Photo 1: "Even though it's a domestic flight, the storage space is surprisingly spacious!"

Next up is the Inokuma family, who had just enjoyed a family trip. On the day they visited Ainoshima, a small island in the Genkai Sea in Fukuoka Prefecture where many cats live, they boarded an A350 in economy class on the return flight from Fukuoka to Tokyo.

Photo 2: "Even though it was a domestic flight, the storage space was surprisingly spacious!"

"The storage space above the seats is spacious. It's tall and deep, so it's easy to put luggage in. The seats are also very comfortable, so it's really nice to sit in." (Father)

Photo 3: "Even though it was a domestic flight, the storage space was surprisingly spacious!"

Taking into account the current trends of our customers, the A350 has a wide fuselage, and the overhead storage is large enough to hold a carry-on size trunk standing upright. It is also equipped with an electrically assisted mechanism, which makes it easy to open and close. The newly designed seats are also international specifications, and are even more comfortable than the seats on conventional domestic flights.

"In addition to the convenient cup holders and storage compartments, the legroom is spacious, which is a nice touch for families with children."

"The legroom is spacious and comfortable. When you have children it's easy to drop things, but this makes it easy to pick them up." (Mother)

Image 1: "In addition to the convenient cup holders and storage compartments, the legroom is spacious, which is a nice touch for families with children."

Children will be presented with a model A350 by the cabin attendants (please note that numbers are limited). My eldest son, 7 years old and a huge airplane enthusiast, immediately put the model together.

Image 2: "In addition to the convenient cup holders and storage compartments, the legroom is spacious, which is a nice touch for families with children."

"This table is very convenient because it can be folded in half. Even when folded compactly in half, there is a recess where you can place a drink, which is convenient for placing your smartphone or other small items. I also like that the drink holder can be used even when the table is stored. I also like that there is a small item holder in the seat pocket." (Mother)

Image 3: "In addition to the convenient cup holders and storage compartments, the legroom is spacious, which is a nice touch for families with children."

"The kids were so excited watching the takeoff and landing on their personal monitors!"

One thing that everyone seemed to enjoy was the personal monitors installed in every seat. Cameras on the tail and under the fuselage allowed them to see real-time footage of the outside world. The takeoff and landing were particularly impressive, and the two children were glued to the screen.

Photo 1: "The children were so excited watching the takeoff and landing on their personal monitors!"

"My child gets bored very quickly, so it's hard to keep him quiet in his seat. The flight there wasn't an A350, but I brought lots of snacks with me and gave them one after another to keep him entertained. If there are personal monitors, he watches them on his own, so it's a lot easier for me as a parent (laughs)." (Mother)

Photo 2: "The children were so excited watching the takeoff and landing on their personal monitors!"

On the individual monitors, you can enjoy a variety of content, including movies, animations, in-flight magazines, general magazines, and even picture books. When a movie program stops, an 8-digit code is issued, and you can enter this code on the return flight or other trip to resume playback from where you left off. (A350 and domestic 787* only). *The Tokyo-Itami route is scheduled to begin on October 27th.

"I think any parent would understand, but when taking small children on a plane, the biggest worry is that they'll make a lot of noise. So it's really helpful to have all the different videos available. Plus, adults can enjoy it too," said a father.

"Flights with kids have gone from 'long' to 'fun'"

Before landing at Haneda Airport, the children were sleeping soundly in the quiet cabin with engine noise suppressed.

Image 1: "The flight with my child went from 'long' to 'fun'"

"It seems like it's rare to find a domestic flight of this quality. It's easy to get bored on an airplane, but the A350 is comfortable and has plenty of entertainment options, so you can use the flight time effectively. When flying with children, there's a lot of looking after them, so the flight feels long. But with this, instead of thinking, 'That was long...' I think, 'That was fun!' and it becomes a fond memory." (Father)

Image 2: "The flight with my child went from 'long' to 'fun'"

In addition to the Class J and economy class seats that we boarded this time, you can also choose First Class. The A350 was designed with attention to detail in every aspect, including quietness, comfort, and entertainment, so you will surely feel the evolution of airplanes. On October 27th, some flights between Haneda and New Chitose Airport will start operating, and the number of flights will gradually increase. We look forward to seeing you on our flight, whether you are traveling or on business.

A small bar that opened in Ishigaki Island in 1998. The ginger syrup, packed with local ingredients, was made to be used in the cocktails and pancakes served there. Some people visit just for the taste, but it also became popular with customers who suffer from poor circulation, and before long it was sold in small portions. One souvenir from Ishigaki Island is "Yuki's Brown Sugar Ginger Syrup."

The syrup, which has an addictive taste that combines the rich sweetness of brown sugar with the dryness of ginger, goes great with soda, beer, or soy milk. It can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, such as pouring it over ice cream or bread, or using it as a seasoning. Pasta-ya Miele is a popular Italian restaurant opened by a chef who moved to Ishigaki Island. The deliciousness of the homemade dressing used at the restaurant became popular, and after about two years, the popular and dramatically named "Night Sky Ishigakijima Dressing" was commercialized.

This luxurious, handmade, additive-free dressing is made with carefully selected ingredients such as salt from Ishigaki Island, brown sugar from Hateruma Island, the southernmost island in Japan, and domestic onions. Inspired by the starry night sky of Ishigaki Island, it contains a single star-shaped onion inspired by the Southern Cross. With a gentle flavor and exquisite black sesame taste, it goes great with salads and meat dishes. It is available in a series such as "Morning Shikwasa" and "Sunset Sky," so we recommend purchasing the three-bottle set.

When you go to a soba restaurant on the island to eat Yaeyama soba, a specialty of Okinawa, you will always find "Hibachi," also known as island pepper, on the table. It has a unique flavor that has a somewhat tropical aroma. This spice unique to the Yaeyama Islands is also a perfect souvenir from Ishigaki Island.

"100% Premium Hibachi" uses only Okinawan Hibachi, which has been cultivated in the Yaeyama Islands since ancient times. When you open the bottle, a sweet aroma wafts out, and when you put it in your mouth, you can feel a spicy taste after the sweetness. It is a traditional island spice that has become established in Yaeyama as a way to eliminate the odor of meat dishes. It can be used to flavor Yaeyama soba, and you can enjoy a change of tropical flavor when used in stir-fries.

600ml 1,320 yen / Sold by: Seifuku Shuzo

A classic Okinawa souvenir that is perfect for alcohol lovers is awamori. It is produced by six breweries on Ishigaki Island, and a wide variety of awamori is available at airports and souvenir shops. One of the most recommended is "Koshu Ishigaki" produced by Seifuku Shuzo, which was founded in 1949. This awamori can only be purchased on Ishigaki Island, and is not available for sale online.

Its rich flavor is achieved through traditional direct-fire earthenware pot distillation, with careful adjustment of heat. It uses aged liquor that has been aged for three years, and has an alcohol content of 25%, which is a little low for awamori. When you drink it, the slight sweetness of the rice and the mellowness of the aged liquor spread throughout your mouth. With an easy-to-drink, gentle flavor, it is sure to please not only awamori fans, but also those who have not had much awamori before.

The national fireworks competition "Omagari Fireworks" is held in Daisen City, Akita Prefecture, about an hour's drive from Akita Airport. Its history dates back to 1910 (Meiji 43), when it began as the "Ou-U Six Prefectures Fireworks Exhibition," a fireworks competition that was a sideshow at the festival of Akita Suwa Shrine in Daisen City. It is a venerable fireworks festival that boasts a history of over 100 years.

Omagari displays fireworks with different themes each season, centering around the National Fireworks Competition in the summer, so you can enjoy fireworks all year round.

The National Fireworks Competition, held every August, sees 28 participating fireworks companies compete with their skills in five No. 5 fireworks in the daytime fireworks division, two No. 10 fireworks in the nighttime fireworks division, and creative fireworks to determine the best fireworks maker in Japan. Omagari is the only place in the country where the daytime fireworks division is held. You can enjoy the elaborate fireworks created by fireworks makers from all over Japan, and it is a very impressive event.

The 2025 national fireworks competition, "Omagari Fireworks," has been scheduled to take place on August 30th. It's a popular event every year, so if you're interested, be sure to check the dates early.

Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, is about an hour and a half away by bus from Niigata Airport. The Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks Display, held on the riverbed of the Shinano River, Japan's longest river, is a spectacular fireworks display.

It is said that the festival began in 1879 at the Senju-cho Hachiman Shrine festival in Nagaoka, when people involved in the red-light district pooled together funds to set off 350 fireworks.
After that, it became known throughout the country, but the event was canceled due to the Pacific War. Nagaoka suffered heavy damage in the Nagaoka air raid on August 1, 1945, but on August 1 of the following year, the "Nagaoka Reconstruction Festival," the precursor to the Nagaoka Festival, was held.

In 1947, the fireworks display was revived as a memorial for the dead and a symbol of restoration, and was later renamed "Nagaoka Festival," as it remains today.

The Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks Display is a large-scale fireworks display that has attracted more than 1 million people in recent years. It boasts an unprecedented scale of fireworks, including the 30-gou fireworks, the Niagara, which stretches 650 meters in length, the 100-saku fireworks, and the Phoenix Fireworks praying for restoration , which bloom across a width of about 2 kilometers.

The 2025 Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks Display is scheduled to be held on August 2nd and 3rd. All seats in the viewing area are paid seats, and only those with viewing tickets can enter the fireworks venue. Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition | Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture

The Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition is also known as the competition to decide the best starmine (rapid-fire continuous fireworks) in Japan, and fireworks artists combine a wide variety of fireworks to launch gorgeous and impressive starmines. The competition is divided into three categories: starmine, 10-gou ball, and creative fireworks.

The Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition began in 1925. The 24th head priest of Shinryu-ji Temple in Tsuchiura City used his own money to hold the event on the shores of Lake Kasumigaura in order to commemorate those who had died in the line of duty in the air force and to revitalize the economy, which had been devastated by the recession following the Great Kanto Earthquake.

The 94th Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition is scheduled to be held on November 1st in 2025. Paid seating will be available, and details on how and when tickets will go on sale will be announced on the following website. Come experience "Japan's No. 1 Fireworks Festival"!

One way to enjoy the festival is to search for the best fireworks festival in Japan. We have picked out two festivals that we highly recommend you visit.

  • Sumida River Fireworks Festival | Around Sumida River, Tokyo
  • Toyako Long-run Fireworks Festival | Toyako Onsen, Hokkaido

What exactly makes these fireworks festivals the best in Japan? Let's take a look.

The longest-running fireworks festival in Japan | Sumida River Fireworks Festival

The Sumida River Fireworks Festival is a major summer event in Tokyo, held in areas of Tokyo such as Asakusa and Ryogoku, particularly in the areas around the Sumida River, where the Edo atmosphere remains. It is one of the largest fireworks festivals in Japan, attracting nearly one million spectators and broadcasting the event on television.

In fact, it wasn't until 1978 that the name was changed to Sumida River Fireworks Festival, and before that it was called "Ryogoku River Opening." We'll go into more detail later, but Ryogoku River Opening is considered to be the beginning of fireworks festivals in Japan. Although it was temporarily suspended due to worsening traffic conditions, it can be said to be the longest-running fireworks festival in Japan.

The sight of 20,000 fireworks and the Tokyo Skytree (R) performing side by side is a sight to behold. As you watch the fireworks, you will also be able to feel the excitement of the Edokko people who once enjoyed the river festival in Ryogoku.

Some people enjoy the view from a cruise on the Sumida River, while others enjoy the view from a hotel. Because of its large scale, people enjoy it in different ways, so find the best spot for you.

Japan's longest-running fireworks festival | Lake Toya Long-Running Fireworks Festival

Provided by: Toyako Onsen Tourism Association

About 2 hours and 30 minutes by car from Sapporo city, Toyako Onsen is a popular place where you can enjoy high-quality hot springs, and the Toyako Long Run Fireworks Festival has been held since 1982.

The most distinctive feature of this festival is that you can enjoy fireworks every day for a long period of time, from the end of April to the end of October. There are long-running fireworks festivals held in other places, but no other festivals are held for such a long period of time.

When it comes to fireworks festivals, many people probably think of summer, but they can also be enjoyed in spring and autumn, so the appeal of long-run fireworks is that you can enjoy different firework scenes depending on the season.

Approximately 450 fireworks are set off every day between 20:45 and 21:05 while traveling by boat on Lake Toya. The large fireworks floating in the sky above Lake Toya and the fireworks reflected on the vast lake surface create a spectacular sight. If you enjoy it from a pleasure boat, the experience becomes even more immersive.

The area around Lake Toya is also attractive for its beautiful scenery formed by volcanic activity. Why not go and experience the unique scenery of nature and fireworks, regardless of the summer?
