Two 
nationals — a former student in Ukraine and his father — have been detained after they attempted to smuggle classified technical documentation on Ukraine’s “Neptune” missile system to China.
The younger suspect remained in Ukraine after being expelled in 2023 for academic underperformance and sought to recruit a Ukrainian engineer involved in advanced weapon development.
His father, who resides in China and has close ties with China’s security agencies, visited Ukraine to personally coordinate his son’s espionage activities. The father entered Ukraine on July 7 and visited the Embassy in Kyiv the next day. On July 9, he was detained.
