I’ve been thinking a lot about the interaction yesterday at the panel on AI and more generally how I’ve felt about the conference and how I fit into the metascience community, and here’s a potentially useful analogy… 🌈 thread👇

There’s a lot of discussion in the LGBTQIA+ community about whether or not there should be corporate sponsors at pride. The money from corporate sponsors can make for a huge pride celebration, and some feel comforted by the fact that corporate sponsors are showing LGBTQIA+ support…
…others feel that corporate sponsors are just “pink washing” and benefitting from the good press of sponsoring pride when they’re actually contributing negatively to human rights / the climate / the political landscape or whatever it may be.
Some think that the way we will increase LGBTQIA+ rights is by partnering with the people who are in power… others think that we need to dismantle existing power structures in order to make real progress for the whole community as opposed to only the most privileged.
Some LGBTQIA+ people want to expand norms to include themselves… others want to challenge norms and queer the way things are done.
Some LGBTQIA+ people think that their fight should be focused on only LGBTQIA+ rights… others believe that we can’t fight for LGBTQIA+ rights without also fighting capitalism and the white cisheteropatriarchy.
This has a strong feeling of Monty Python- and meanwhile while communities are divided they are conquered anyway. So- did you feel belonging at Metascience 2025?
