Man shot near St. John’s Park in unprovoked Canada Day attack

A man in his 30s was shot near St. John’s Park on Canada Day evening in what police believe was an unprovoked attack.

Winnipeg Police said the man was walking along the riverbank trail near the park and heading east toward the Redwood Bridge shortly before 8:00 p.m. on July 1 when he was confronted from behind and shot by an unknown male. The victim did not see the shooter.

After being shot, the man ran up to Main Street and was able to call for help. Emergency services responded, and he was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police secured the area and began canvassing for witnesses and surveillance footage shortly after the incident. Investigators have not released details on the type of weapon used or any possible motive.

Police have not yet made any arrests and are seeking the public’s assistance. Anyone with information or who may have been in the area around the time of the shooting is urged to contact the Winnipeg Police Service or Crime Stoppers.

The investigation is ongoing.
