The red mast with a down arrow is i think the symbol for having less sailors than the minimum requirement for the ship to sail at full speed. But since i did not play this game for a week know thanks to the cargo load bug im not 100% sure.
Correct on all counts! The "splitting the air" is indicative of the use of a ram, and going to ramming speed. if it hits, it chunks a high amount of damage out of the target hit.
With the right crew you can initiate boarding while colliding with a ram. It's truly an overpowered skill with the right crew. I have done 5 ship bounties and captured all 5 (scrap one cos of 4 limit) so fast that the longest parts were the loading times and the fight 'cut' scenes.
