Foreigners should seriously rethink visiting Florida or the United States while Donald Trump is president. This isn’t the same country you may have visited before. The laws are unpredictable, the rhetoric is hostile, and the culture has shifted into something colder, more aggressive, and in many places, openly discriminatory.
You can have all your paperwork in order and still find yourself detained at the border. You can come here on a tourist visa and still get flagged just for your accent, your skin tone, or your country of origin. Policies can change overnight, and there’s no guarantee you’ll be treated fairly. The system doesn’t have your back. Even legal travelers are being swept into the chaos of an immigration crackdown that no longer distinguishes between visitors and targets.
Hate crimes are up. Racial profiling is back in full swing. People from Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia are getting the worst of it, but let’s be real. If you’re not white and visibly American, you’re taking a gamble.
And Florida? Florida has become one of the most openly hostile states to immigrants and international visitors. The laws are vague and intentionally weaponized. You can be pulled over while driving to Disney and find yourself being questioned about your immigration status. You can end up in jail, not because you did anything wrong, but because the state gave local law enforcement a green light to harass whoever they want, especially if they “look foreign.” It doesn’t matter if you’re here legally. It doesn’t matter if you’re on vacation.
Add to that a backdrop of political instability, federal courts being remade into ideological battlegrounds, and civil rights eroding by the week. If something happens while you’re here, you can’t count on a fair investigation or quick embassy access. It might not even make the news.
Then there’s the moral piece. Every time you spend money here, that cash goes straight into a state and federal system that is using your tourism dollars to prop up some of the most extreme policies in decades. That’s not a souvenir. That’s complicity.
If you’re looking for peace, safety, dignity, or even just a decent trip, you won’t find it here right now. There are other places on Earth that will welcome you, respect you, and protect you. Go there. Florida will be here later. The United States will still be here later. And maybe, just maybe, it’ll be a place worth visiting again.
