Let’s clear something up. You do not have an unconditional right to say whatever you want on a private social media platform. These platforms are owned by companies with their own rules. The EU isn’t destroying free speech, it’s stepping in to curb the spread of blatant misinformation, conspiracy theories, and political propaganda disguised as “opinions.” This isn’t about silencing everyday people. It’s about holding accountable the ones who profit off of lies. The ones who manufacture chaos under the label of “truth seekers” while playing foot soldier for authoritarian movements. The United States has the First Amendment. The EU doesn’t. Different governments, different legal systems. And honestly, with the rise of far-right groups like AfD in Germany and extremists meddling in elections all over the West, the last thing we need is more viral bullshit dressed up as freedom. This isn’t a slippery slope. It’s a firewall. Social media makes it easy for bad actors across the world to interfere in politics thousands of miles away. And we’ve seen this movie before. Disinformation is how strongmen get power, plain and simple. So if you’re panicking over your “free speech” being threatened, maybe look closer at what kind of speech you’re so desperate to protect. Because if what you’re defending is a lie that hurts people, destabilizes democracy, or props up fascists, then yeah. Maybe it should be deleted. Silenced. Abolished. Not because truth is fragile. But because democracy is.
