1971 Vintage Wire Press Photo by ASSOCIATED PRESS.Cooperstown, New York.Leroy Satchel Paige, who during his long career in baseball warned against looking over the shoulder-- less you find out who is catching up with you, looks over his own shoulder to plaque showing him to be a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Paige came to the major leagues in 1948 at the age of 42 after a long career in the Negro Leagues. He was installed into the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, N.Y. Monday.Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige was an American professional baseball pitcher who played in Negro league baseball and Major League Baseball. His career spanned five decades and culminated with his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
