Judaism in the Roman Empire


Wilson, the President of the USA, in 1918 called the destruction of Jerusalem (70 AD) and "the annihilation of the Jewish people by the Romans one of the greatest injustices in world history that must be righted". This judgment is wrong.

How did the destruction of Jerusalem come about? During the last period of the Roman Republic, i.e. during the mighty revolutionary wars, from which the military dictatorship of Augustus finally emerged, the Jews always knew how to find the right connection with astonishing agility. First they stood up for Pompey, then for Caesar, later for Cassitis and Brutus, later for the triumvirs of the year 43 and in the final decision initially for Antony and finally for Octavian Augustus. Out of gratitude for Antipater, who had rescued him from a dangerous situation in Alexandria (47 BC), Julius Caesar restored the Jewish state and granted extensive privileges. Antipater became king: he was succeeded by his son Herod. In the year 6 AD, the emperor Augustus, at the Jews' own request, abolished the kingship and made Judea a Roman province; magnificent gifts from the imperial family adorned the temple in Jerusalem. In 66 AD, bloody riots broke out in Caesarea and Jerusalem; in Caesarea the non-Jews were the aggressors, in Jerusalem the Jews. In Jerusalem, not only the Romans but also the moderate Jews were victims of popular rage. This was the signal for cruel Jew-baiting in Damascus, Ascalon and Tyre. And now the real war began in 66-70. The fighting was not only between the Roman and Jewish troops; the Jewish parties also murdered each other. The horrific blood work ended in 70 with
the destruction of Jerusalem.

Despite these terrible outbreaks of mutual hatred, the imperial government did not allow itself to be carried away by further violent measures. At the end of this section, the close relations of the unfortunate Emperor Henry IV (1056-1106) with Judaism may be mentioned.

Probably, bitter necessity brought him into dependence on Jewish moneylenders. We have documents about his favors, especially towards the Jews in Worms and Speyer. In Speyer, the Jew-friendly Bishop Rudiger Huozmann had already granted the Jews, in 1084, alongside other freedoms, their own jurisdiction. In 1191, he was surpassed by the emperor, who determined that in a trial between Christians and Jews, judgment would be rendered according to Jewish law.

Sombart writes about this:

"For centuries, a special Jewish law has been in force for the acquisition of movable property by Jews; it has found its first recognition in the privilege granted by Henry IV to the Jews of Speyer: 'If a stolen thing is found in a Jew, and the Jew claims to have bought it, he may confirm by oath according to his law for what sum he bought it; if the owner then pays him so much, he shall give it to the latter for it."

This gave rise to a legally guaranteed right of the Jews to steal. At that time, our legal confusion began due to the penetration of foreign legal views. - The new Jewish settlement in Speyer was also surrounded with a protective wall [to defend against] the growing hostile popular mood; it is the first ghetto segregation in Germany: not an imposed hardship, but a perk for the protection of the Jews! Of course, the ghetto later turned into a plague for the Jews: just as the one created by Louis the Pious in the 9th century turned into a plague for the Jews. The Jewish Expulsions

The 13th century was for the Jews at the same time a time of greatest, tremendous enrichment and the beginning of increasing persecutions. It must be noted that these usually did not start from above, but from below. As in ancient times, the Jews succeeded in
Medieval and modern times by repeatedly winning the favor of the great. It was precisely because individual kings, secular and spiritual princes, the authorities of the cities, gave up their subjects to exploitation by the Jews in order to obtain money, that bitterness grew in the lower strata of the people: just as it was against the Roman Pontifical church. Finally, the Jews were expelled from Western and Central Europe. The religious opposition played a role in this only to the extent that excessive insults of the Jews against Christ and Christianity became known.

In England, the impetus for the expulsion of the Jews (1291) was the discovery of widespread Jewish counterfeit coins.

In France, the Jews gained great wealth and extensive land ownership during the 13th century. Although it followed in the beginning in the 14th century, the property was confiscated several times, but the Jews found protection under the kings Louis X and Charles V. In exchange for enormous tribute payments, they were allowed an interest rate of up to 80% on their financial transactions. The bitterness of the people forced their complete expulsion in 1394.

Particularly instructive is the history of Spain. Time and again, the accumulated anger of the people erupted over economic oppression and the treachery of the Jews, over mockery of Christianity and of quackery. We hear of the Jewish financial advisors to the kings; their activities were particularly severe under Alfonso I (1325-1380) and his brother Don Pedro.

"The Jews suck the blood of the afflicted Christians and consume their goods through tax farming," states an old chronicle. The public outrage grew, and around 1480, massive persecutions of Jews began. To escape, many Jews converted to Christianity. Since 1451, the Inquisition had been working against Jews and false Christians, who were called "Maranos." However, the royal couple, Ferdinand and Isabella, tried once more to show leniency. It was only when, during the Granada War against the last Moors of Spain, the Jews secretly supported the enemy that the punitive measures broke out in 1492. A decree was issued stating that Jews had to either convert to Christianity or leave the country within four months. At that time, about 300,000 Jews emigrated from Spain: some to Turkey, where their descendants are still called "Spaniards"; others to Portugal, from where they were soon expelled as well.

In Germany, due to the multitude of states, a unified approach was no longer possible. When the Jews were expelled from one place, they were welcomed in another. The 15th century brought the expulsion of Jews from the most important German trading cities: from Cologne, Augsburg, Strasbourg, Erfurt, Nuremberg, Ulm, Regensburg. In contrast, they found refuge in Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg. A little later, the Jews in Italy faced a similar fate. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the hostility towards the Jews was so great that accusations of ritual murder and well poisoning gained widespread belief. Around 1350, during the time of the "Black Death" (bubonic plague), there were brutal persecutions of Jews first in France and then in Germany.

Poland as a Jewish Land

Since ancient times, numerous Jews lived in Eastern Europe, from where they engaged in a thriving slave trade. Our German word "Sklave" originated from "Slawe"; the Slavic peoples provided a rich source for forced labor. Later, Poland became the refuge for Jews expelled from Germany; they became indispensable to the magnates in the exploitation of the peasants.


From the dukes and later the kings, they received numerous privileges, including distilleries and the sale of spirits. Despite all appeals, even from high clergy and the Pope, they repeatedly found protection among the kings and magnates. Indeed, in the 17th century, the long-stored popular rage also broke out here, especially against the Jewish tax and tribute suckers, leading to horrific persecutions of Jews ("pogroms") throughout the East. The Ghetto Period


"Ghetto, Ghetto compulsion!" The German Michel is expected to feel the deepest sympathy for the "poor" Jews: for the (((eternally persecuted and oppressed Jews))), who have been crammed together in filthy Jewish quarters and narrow Jewish alleys, leading a life unworthy of human beings, defenseless and at the mercy of the whims and mockery of Christians.

The first walled ghetto in Germany, the Jewish quarter in Speyer (1084), was a privilege. Only towards the end of the Middle Ages did ghetto compulsion arise from voluntary separation, and even then the segregation was not strict; numerous exceptions are known, e.g., for court Jews and doctors.

This was still acknowledged a few years ago by the Jew Rathenau: "In close connection with each other, in strict isolation from the outside: thus they live in a semi-voluntary, invisible ghetto, not a living part of the people, but a foreign organism within its body."
What were the conditions in the 15th to 18th century? The states of Western and Central Europe had exercised their undeniable right to expel foreigners. Instead of settling in the East, where there was plenty of space, and dedicating themselves to agriculture or a trade, the Jews behaved like people who want to enter a park where a sign at the entrance reads "Entry for strangers prohibited." They want to remain "strangers," but do not want to be treated as "strangers." They managed to sneak in here and there. The ongoing wars of modern times, the financial needs of kings, princes, and city authorities, and the rising luxury opened the gates for them.

Indeed, Luther had warned seriously and loudly against the Jews in his later years. Important Jewish Migrations

Around the turn of the Middle Ages to the Modern Era, hundreds of thousands of Jews were first expelled from Spain and then from Portugal. In 1597, the first Portuguese Jews settled in Amsterdam and gained access; soon the first synagogue was opened, and the Jews themselves called Amsterdam their new, great Jerusalem. Jewish communities emerged in numerous other cities in Holland; during the Dutch Wars of Liberation, Jews also migrated from Antwerp. - In England, the admission of Jews had been prohibited since 1291. However, Queen Elizabeth had a Jewish court physician around 1600; Cromwell also believed around 1650 that he could not do without Jews. Nevertheless, there were still restrictions on the admission of Jews. Only the "Glorious" Revolution of 1688 brought about a change. William III of Orange was called to the throne of England; many Jews from Amsterdam migrated with him and enriched England with the trained technique of stock trading. Sombart writes: "The stock exchange appeared like Minerva, fully armed, springing forth; the main negotiators of the first English bond were Jews; they stood by the side of the Orange William III."

Among his Jewish advisors, the wealthy Medina had the greatest influence.

Puritanism and Enlightenment

Indeed, the various, conflicting English-Scottish churches and sects detached themselves from Rome; but they increasingly came under the influence of Judaism. It began the peculiar balance between a displayed piety and the unbridled greed for money, which is so unappealing to us Germans in the English and North Americans: "a powerful drive for acquisition under the ashes of an unheard-of bigotry."

1) Regarding Great Britain, Professor Kuhnemann states that, in its essence, it is "more a Jewish than a Christian power." There is a widely spread society in the Anglo-Saxon world that calls itself "Believers in Identity" because they believe that Britons and Israelites are "identical"; they claim that the Britons are the ten tribes separated from Judah after Solomon's death, the lost and found Israel. The same tendencies are represented by the influential Anglo-Israelite movement, which even infects the English royal family.

Jewish spirit! And just as the Jews divided into orthodox and liberal Jews 2000 years ago, so did Puritanism and the "Enlightenment" develop from the same root. This is the age of rationalism, where people believed they could calculate everything and regulate it with their own calculating minds. Freemasonry

The close connection between Anglo-Americanism and Judaism has been significantly contributed to by the development of the Freemason order. The Grand Lodge founded in London in 1717 became the mother of all modern Freemasonry; it is already evident from the "Book of Constitutions" from 1723 that the order was a secret society. It is astonishing how quickly it spread not only across England and the American New England states but also throughout Western and Central European countries. Freemasonry presented itself as a kind of religion, and it may have contributed to its spread that it particularly opposed Roman Papism. The demand for a "natural and reasonable religion" also corresponded to the intellectual currents of the time. Already in the Constitution book of 1723, it states: "The Mason is obligated to that religion in which all men agree." Indeed, we find almost no Jews in the lodges during the first decades, as they were considered only semi-citizens.

The bitter enmity between Freemasonry and the Roman Papal Church reveals itself, upon closer inspection, as a competition in the pursuit of world domination. Internally, the Papal Church and the "Counter-Church," the Jesuits and the Freemasons are fundamentally related. North America as a Jewish Land

Sombart's statement "America is a Jewish land in all its parts" initially applied only to South and Central America. Spanish and Portuguese Jews arrived there alongside the explorers. The first merchants and industrialists in America were Jews. From the very beginning, sugar plantations and the sugar industry formed a main source of their enrichment for centuries. This applies to both the Spanish West Indies and Portuguese Brazil, where numerous esteemed Dutch Jews settled when it was under Dutch control from 1624 to 1654; it also applies to the French colonies in the West Indies and southern North America.
Everywhere, Jews were the rulers of the sugar industry and sugar trade.

And what about the present-day United States of North America? Here, the development was initially quite different, as no adventurers and fortune seekers immigrated, but rather simple, serious men and women who settled amidst many hardships and dangers, seeking not earthly power and honor, but freedom of their faith: Puritans and Quakers from England, Palatines from Germany, Huguenots from France.

Rural settlements emerged without slave labor. - But since the accession of William III of Orange (1689), the English motherland experienced the "blessings" of Jewish immigration, and gradually the Jewish economic spirit, combined with an incredible Phariseeism, spread in the New England states of North America. Sombart refers to Americanism as distilled Jewish spirit. And Halfeld writes: "The peculiar duality in American life (the idealistic pathos that pairs with shrewd business practices: the religious underpinning of the success concept; the preacher who is an entrepreneur; the proselytizer of morality; the businessman with God and ideals on his lips; Wilson's 14 points; the world peace certified by Wall Street): all of this ultimately traces back to the Puritan ethos." - The Americans have also masterfully managed to put Freemasonry in their service. The number of Jews in the United States was initially small, about 4,000 around 1800, and about 50,000 by 1850. The Jews in Germany

In Germany, the fragmentation of states benefited the Jews, making a unified approach against them more difficult. Particularly the Thirty Years' War gave them the opportunity to expand once again. The financial needs of the Emperor and the princes opened the gates for them; a mass immigration of Eastern Jews occurred.

The Habsburgs

Indeed, in Austria during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, there were repeated harsh measures against the Jews; however, the Habsburg emperors became increasingly dependent on Jewish moneylenders, partly due to the many wars and partly due to their extravagance. The age of court Jews began during the Thirty Years' War. We hear of the Bohemian Jew Lazarus, who "obtained intelligence and reports, which were of great importance to the imperial armada, or had them obtained at his own expense and always endeavored to supply all kinds of clothing and ammunition needs to the imperial armada." The Jew Jakob Bassewi Schmieles was elevated to the nobility under the name "von Treuenberg." As Kernholt writes, his "loyalty" was primarily expressed in that he accepted and circulated the low-value thalers he was paid for his supplies.

The court Jews were given the opportunity by emperors and princes to establish themselves even in places where Jews were otherwise not tolerated. A hundred years later, under Emperor Charles VI (1711-1740), the ennoblement of wealthy Jews became so rampant that through blood mixtures, the majority of the Austrian nobility gradually became Jewish. The example of Vienna was imitated by hundreds of German princes; soon there were court Jews at all larger and smaller courts who satisfied the great financial needs of the princes at the expense of the subjects. The most famous court Jew became Suss, who became an all-powerful minister in Wurttemberg and attracted the justified hatred of the people.


The Hohenzollerns


The Electorate of Brandenburg had no Jews in the 17th century. We must deem it disastrous that the Great Elector Frederick William I, when there was a temporary expulsion of Jews from Vienna in 1670, allowed the immigration of fifty Jewish families. His extravagant son, King Frederick I, was tempted by the lucrative source of revenue from the protection letters for Jews to permit a larger number of Jews and we have received loud complaints about the resulting grievances.

There were no expulsions in the 18th century. However, Kings Frederick William I and Frederick II, the Great, were eager to protect their subjects from exploitation. This became increasingly difficult as the acquisition of Silesia and West Prussia multiplied the Jewish population of the state. Frederick II issued a "Regulation for the Jewish Community" in Prussia. The freedom of movement for Jews was restricted for the sake of the greater good, and they remained under foreign law. The great king prioritized duties to his own people; he was, as Kernholt writes, "the last Hohenzollern of whom one can say this about his Jewish policy." It should not be overlooked that even Frederick the Great felt compelled during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) to engage with Jewish coin debasers due to immense financial need. In the process, the court Jew Ephraim became wealthy.

The Free Imperial Cities

Sombart mentions Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main among the German cities that accepted Jews. In this context, the Hamburg Senate denied the presence of Jews in 1603 for self-serving and commercial gain, despite the complaints of the citizenry and the clergy. - We have an excellent book by Hofmeister on the gradual Judaization of the Hanseatic city of Lubeck: "From Hanseatic Spirit to Merchant Spirit"; there we read how the council always sides with the Jews, while the entire citizenry demands vigorous measures against the immigration of Jews. - The Napoleonic era brought a flood of Jews. After the Wars of Liberation, the brave mayor Smidt distinguished himself in keeping his Hanseatic city of Bremen free of Jews.

The Beginning of the Judaization of Berlin

"Robbery of the Firstborn!" We think of the last centuries before Christ, of the so-called Hellenistic age. In the newly founded Greek cities of the East, especially in Alexandria and Antioch, Greek-speaking Jews lived alongside the Greeks. A rapprochement occurred between Judaism and Hellenism. But the end result was that the Greeks lost their uniqueness and became orientalized; the Jews adopted the language and cultural treasures of the Greeks but remained Jews.

The same is repeating itself today since the 18th century after Christ, and the "Enlightenment" with its ideas of freedom, equality, brotherhood, tolerance, and humanity became the ladder for the rise of the Jews; they skillfully presented their desires for civil rights equality as a demand for tolerance and wounded human dignity. The Jew (((Moses Mendelssohn))) (1729-1786) became the father of Reform Judaism (((without ceasing to be a true Law Jew inwardly))). He was, as Bartels has demonstrated, by no means the ideal person he is portrayed as; rather, he accuses him of duplicity.

With success, (((Moses Mendelssohn))) endeavored to lead his fellow tribesmen out of the intellectual ghetto, to convey to them the treasures of German culture, and to guide them to use the educated German language instead of the Jewish German patois. Through his own example, he showed them the way to (((literary activity and to influencing public opinion))). His efforts were aided by the humanitarian spirit of the Enlightenment. Competing with each other, the French and Germans strove to be "modern," and they created images of model Jews who had never lived anywhere at any time: numerous writers presented themselves as advocates for Jews in order to appear "unprejudiced." The Jewish professor Graetz writes: "It was a very important moment in the history of the Jews when the two young men, Mendelssohn and Lessing, became acquainted with each other." Indeed, it was very important! We particularly think of Lessing's poem "Nathan the Wise." Generally, the main character is seen as his friend Moses Mendelssohn. Famous is the story from the time of the Crusades about the three rings, which Lessing adapted for his didactic poem. According to his portrayal, a time will come when the three rings, that is, the three external forms of religion (Judaism, Christianity, Islam), will lose their significance to make way for the true religion that requires no external forms.

We regret that in this poetry, the ideal figure of the Reform Jew is portrayed with more or less serious character flaws, not only in the representatives of Islam but also in those of Christianity. Above all, however, Enlightenment ideas, especially the thought of a natural and rational religion (of "Deism"), are placed in the service of Judaism; Deism and Judaism appear to be closely intertwined, and to this day, Jews present themselves as the main bearers of the "Enlightenment"; everything that does not suit them is labeled as "backward." However, the so-called natural and rational religion (of "Deism") is not a religion at all, but at most a beautiful morality. As Adolf Bartels rightly says, our current defensive struggle is less against Lessing himself, who will retain his significant place in our literary history, than against the growing cult of Lessing and the Lessing legend in the 19th century; the increasing glorification of Lessing kept pace with the growing power of Judaism. Not only the Jews Borne, Heine, Graetz, Engel have celebrated him excessively, but also respected German professors, among them Erich Schmidt.

The goal that Moses Mendelssohn pursued was the complete equality of Jews (((without them ceasing to be Jews))): thus a preference. Judaism as a Combat Organisation

Judaism is a unified Combat Organization, set up politically, religiously, economically or humanitarianly as needed. His goal is called Zion, i.e. the rule of the Jewish man.
