Best sources to learn Greek?

Γειάσου!

I was wondering, what are the best free websites, videos or apps to learn Greek? I am just a beginner.

A few sources I use to learn:

  • Duolingo.

  • ChatGPT (especially if you have pro).

  • Disney+.

  • Audio books on YouTube.

  • Hanging out with family and listening/conversing goes a long way.

  • Google translate.

  • This subreddit.

A little more on how I use ChatGPT. I've been experimenting with different ways to use it to teach me Greek, and it's not perfectly refined yet. But I think it's one of the best tools by far. It can literally roleplay as a language coach, teach grammar, answer questions, interpret, write short stories, and offer suggestions for progress. If you get the app you can also use voice to text / text to voice (a beta feature right now) and simulate a regular conversation. I tell it to correct me if I make a mistake.

Also get the google translate extension so that you can highlight greek text you don't know and translate in one click.

Thank you!

I agree 100% on the ChatGPT part! I use it so much, and is extremely helpful. Sometimes it does make some errors though, but like, people make errors too...

Something I do a lot with ChatGPT is that I write a story. Then let ChatGPT review it, but only tell me how many errors I made, and which kinds of errors. Grammar, spelling, word use, etc.

Then I go back to the drawing board and find my own errors. This works extremely well for me!

Another thing is asking ChatGPT for nuances between words. Sometimes I learn a word that means something, but then there is another word that translates to the same word in my native language. Then I ask ChatGPT for the difference. It really is by far, by faaaaarrr, the best tool out there!

I use Duolingo. It will take a bit to get conversational, but once it does, you find it is worth all the buildup.

it can also help to do the Greek and English course. i also use Google to learn things like conjugation and grammar and stuff, really anything I'm having a hard time figuring out.

True, I used Duolingo for German before. That was the fastest time I learned a language before not using it anymore.

I just found this. Just started but it looks promising. You can choose any channel you like.

Wow, I just watched her a few hours ago. First time learning Greek, plus. With stupid Dyslexia that even makes reading and learning languages hard..but I won't give up if it works for you. 😄😁

So far, I can read and write, but not understand anything. Is there a way to combat this?

what helps me is set videos to slower speeds and watch them with greek subtitles the first time, then english the second, because the first time you get practice associating sounds with word boundaries and the second time words with meaning. note down any words you don't understand that you feel are important and make flash cards with those.

also, what i want to do in the future is make a huge document of words and timestamped links to videos of different native speakers saying them. as a sort of pronounciation database. but thats not something ive tried yet, i just think it might be helpful for me personally

  • If you're a complete beginner I'd use language transfer.

i use duolingo, drops, anki, and memrise (custom course). Once you start to learn some, download Clozemaster.
