How do I get the Colonialism institution without paying for it. :)
I'm playing as Korea, and institutions are brand-new to me. In fact, I wasted a bunch of monarch points getting Renaissance, because I didn't know exactly how it worked. Well, that's OK.

But I've had the crappiest leaders I've ever seen in EU IV (after my first leader, at least), while Ming and Japan seem to get great leaders all the time. Combined with wasting monarch points, I just can't keep up with them technologically. (Of course, they got Renaissance from me for free.)

Still, I'm managing, so far, and it's been lots of fun. But it's almost 1500, and I'm not going to get the Exploration idea group fast enough to discover the New World before then - not even close. But I just can't afford to spend more monarch points for this institution, too.

I've heard that you can get Colonization later on (after it's already appeared in Europe) by colonizing the New World, but not exactly how. Institutions are still new enough that most of the information I'm finding is out of date. Could someone please explain (1) if that's true, and (2) if so, what I need for that to happen.

(Obviously, I won't be anywhere near where European countries are colonizing the New World. I'll be on the other side of the continent, assuming that I get there at all.)

I plan to get the Exploration idea group in six months or so, and the first two ideas sometime after that. Again, I'm desperately short of monarch points, so none of this will be quick. But I do have plenty of money for colonization (at least, until my truce with Ming ends).

Obviously, it will take time for me to get to the west coast of North America at all. But if I can get the Colonization institution without paying for it, that will be an enormous benefit. Anyone want to help out Korea with some advice? It's tough enough with China and Japan both hating me. :)

Maybe there are better strategies, but i think that developing is the only reliable one for getting the first 4 institutions if you are not near European countries. Just spend your admin/diplo points on developing one province when a new institutions is created and keep military for techs and ideas, the "unbalanced research" penalty isn't a big deal if you expand a lot using superior military technology.

You can get colonialism to spread (after it is already founded) by having a Colonial Nation. The overlord of a CN gets a spread in their capital, which will spread quickly in a nation like Korea/Japan due to all the ports. Either than that, you will either need to dev up or wait for the spread to get to you (takes about 100-150 years if in Iberia).

Colonialism can spawn in other continents than Europe. Same for enlighment, global trade and manufactories. You could savescum your way to high tech or you could do it the hard way by developing your provinces. Around 30 dev. points are enough to have an institution fully develop in the province. After it spreads to neighbouring provinces you can pay money to have it spread in your whole country.

I remember in my Japan game that not long after I established my Colonial Nation, I got an event spreading Colonialism to one of my provinces at the cost of some money and diplo power.

Also, a nice thing to watch out for is the development in nearby nation's capitals. You could potentially have the AI develop part of the way to an Institution for you. This is what I did to get Renaissance as Japan, as for some reason Korea bumped up their capital's dev by about 20 points.

OK, that sounds simple enough, if time-consuming. I'll work towards that, then.

As for the rest of you, I'll keep an eye on nearby capitals, but I see no sign that Japan is colonizing anywhere (not yet, at least), and I'm sure that Ming won't.

As I said, I can't afford to spend monarch points on this one (and certainly not admin points!). But who knows? It's going to take me years to get a Colonial Nation, and things might change.

Thanks for the replies!

Get ready pour all your precious points to devolopment to get the things. Ideas are a luxury you cant get

You can afford ideas as a ROTW nation, just don't neglect mil tech or expansion.

I've had an event popup in two games already where my capital gets 100 progress towards Colonization at the cost of something (ducats I think). It's some sort of charter event and in my experience there seems to be a good chance to get it. Maybe someone can look in the event files and see what the prerequisites for it are.

I found it.
trigger = {
is_institution_enabled = new_world_i
NOT = { has_institution = new_world_i }
has_idea = quest_for_the_new_world
NOT = { num_of_colonial_subjects = 1 }
any_known_country = {
has_institution = new_world_i
}
NOT = {
any_owned_province = {
new_world_i = 100
}
}
any_owned_province = {
NOT = { continent = new_world }
NOT = { continent = north_america }
NOT = { continent = south_america }
}
any_owned_province = {
OR = {
continent = new_world
continent = north_america
continent = south_america
}
}
}

mean_time_to_happen = {
months = 400
modifier = {
factor = 0.5
any_known_country = {
has_institution = new_world_i
religion_group = ROOT
So to basically sum it up:

Colonialism has to be enabled, a.k.a. it has already spawned

None of your provinces can have Colonialism already present

You must have the Quest for the New World idea, which will automatically be done by filling out the exploration idea group

The number of colonial subjects that you have must not be equal to 1

Any known country has the Colonialism Institution

You either own land not in the New World, or all of your land is in the New World; not too important

The Mean Time to Happen is 400 months, which equal to about 33 years; this means that the event will take, at most, 33 years to happen, although it can happen before.

The Mean Time to Happen can be cut in half by a country in your religious group having the Colonialism Institution

I'm colonizing in Siberia while waiting for my explorer to discover somewhere else, closer to North America. But as slow as colonizing is going (I've never done this before in EU IV), I don't see how I can get a Colonial Nation in North America for decades yet.

But I'll wait for ten years or so. (It's 1501, and Colonization has already started in Europe.) I'll hope for positive events, but if nothing else happens by then, I'll bite the bullet and spend the monarch points.

At least now, after dumping one crappy leader and one crappy heir and having others die in office, I've got a slightly-below-average leader with an average heir. So maybe I'll be able to afford the monarch points, after all. (These guys look a lot better than the people I've had previously!)

Don't get me wrong, I'm having a blast playing Korea. The fact that Ming and Japan are both dangerous enemies just makes it better. As long as I survive, at least. :)

Thanks again for the replies.

Edit: Re. that last post, I haven't even seen the New World yet, and we know nothing about Europe, but those things are likely to change. So who knows?

Thanks for looking for it! In EU4 math though "=" actually means ">=" - so no colonial subjects.
