For years, the biggest misunderstanding about the story was that people believed the Braidwood Deaf School program closed because he died from alcohol consumption. Wrong. He left the program in 1818, and the school program closed in 1821 by the Reverend of Cumberland Church! His last employer was a tavern where he worked as a bartender, so of course, he was surrounded by alcohol.
