Let's assume my PC is running Ubuntu, but I have a Linux Mint DVD
How can I install Linux Mint onto a selected partition while still running Ubuntu, without messing around with virtual machines? (directly from Ubuntu)

Re: Install Linux Mint from different distribution
The installer should look more or less like the one you know from Ubuntu. Choose the "Something else" method as installation type and mark there the partition, where you want to install Mint.
Re: Install Linux Mint from different distribution
To be clear, TL7, you don't run the installer from within Ubuntu. Rather, you boot a live session and do an installation leaving Ubuntu in place.
Re: Install Linux Mint from different distribution
no shortcut. just run the live dvd/usbstick and install from there if you want to keep ubuntu tell the installer to install along side if not you can use the ubuntu partition
by selecting something else on the partition page. good luck.

Re: Rebootless cross-system installation
An OS is not an application. Each OS (and also its installer) has to get loaded directly at boot time (with the exception of virtualization, but that does not seem to be what you want to do).
