impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
Hello
I have a USB Blu-ray player, which is recognized, but I can't play a Blu-ray with Smplayer. In nemu /open/disc/bluray from disk, nothing happens.
Thanks for the help.

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
Dealing with DVD or BT sources is a problem for media players in Linux in general. Try VLC.

I I tried VLC and installed the corresponding packages and I have the same problem.
I get :
I get :

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
What is the make and model of the BD player? Also go to system reports > system information and paste the complete text of that here. Always do this.

LIke hell it is. Just wrap it in <code> tags. You can;t get decent support without providing system details.

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
VLC alone cannot handle commercial blu-ray video discs. You need the MakeMKV + VLC combo!
This guide still works very well for me on Mint 22.x.

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
If that blu-ray player is a blu-ray burner drive..just rip the bluray movie using Makemkv ( can turn one or multiple titles/episodes also into individual video files ) to turn it into one simple to play video file
Use mpv player to play it....done

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
well !.... If I have to do anything to play my commercial Blu-ray, it becomes "complicated". I also tried with makemkv and makemkv detected my Blu-ray but it got stuck when reading the disc.

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
+1 for MakeMKV, or MakeMKV + VLC
I've never had any issues reading/ripping BD's, ... with MakeMKV unless the physical disc itself had issues, or one time, my internal LG WH16NS40 SATA BD-read/writer Drive was starting to go.
But yes, you should still post the hardware specs, make, model of your BD/DVD drive,..., as mentioned by others above.

Open a Terminal and post output of: LANG=C inxi -FJmdoprxxxz embedding your output in between
Or,
From the Mint Menu, Copy'n'Post the "System Information" output from the "System Reports" app.

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
I guess you do need MakeMKV. However, it will not read all BR (or DVD) disks.
DVDFab has a pretty good BR ripper but it's WIndows only and nonfree, though there's a free trial period. Maybe it would work in Wine?

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
I followed MiZoG's guide:
https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2022/08/wat ... th-makemkv
but when I try to play the BR, I still get the error:
whem open makemkv I get this : MakeMKV v1.18.1 linux(x64-release) started
no more things

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
I can;t read that but, again, MakeMKV will not rip all disks.

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
I don;t give a tinker's damn what that blog article says. MakeMKV will not rip any and all BRs. Or all DVDs either. It's better at ripping disks in Linux than Handbrake but not perfect.

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
I did suggest the DVDFab BR decrypter. You'd need to use Wine (or perhaps a GUI for it like PlayOnLinux or Lutris). I have no idea if it works in Wine or not. Linux is very lacking in this area compared to Windows.

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
makemkv.com is currently down and app suddenly cannot read, rip and encode any disk, either Blu-ray or DVD.
It looks like makemkv in order to work requires connection to makemkv servers.
Can other makemkv users confirm my assumption?

Re: impossible to play a Blu-ray with Smplayer
I've never used MakeMKV. I've always played directly from the disc.
I haven't watched a bluray in a while, so this could be outdated. But this was the guide that I followed to get it working:
