Drunk Russian master sacked as Wilson bulker damaged in collision
Captain dismissed with immediate effect
A Wilson mini-bulker has been damaged in a collision with another vessel in Germany.
The Norwegian owner confirmed the accident involving the 8,300-dwt Wilson Nanjing (built 2012) in Bremen on Thursday evening.
Marine police said the 55-year-old Russian captain of the bulker failed an alcohol test.
Wilson managing director Oyvind Gjerde told TradeWinds the master had been dismissed with immediate effect.
Police said the Wilson Nanjing hit the bow of an unnamed moored ship that also sustained damage.
No injuries were reported.
The Wilson Nanjing was leaving the Weserport Terminal 1 in the evening when the accident occurred.
The vessel then returned to the pier, where it remained for a number of days until relocating to another berth in the harbour.
When officers from the Bremen marine police arrived on the ship, they could smell alcohol on the captain.
He provided a voluntary breath test, which confirmed a blood-alcohol level over the permitted limit, and officers barred him from continuing his voyage.
A follow-up sample was ordered and a $6,000 security deposit taken.
The incident is being investigated.
The Wilson Nanjing has insurance cover through Skuld in Norway.
