The Defund Hate Campaign is no longer active as of Spring 2024

After taking stock of the challenges posed by the current political landscape, coalition partners made the decision to close the campaign in order to create space for new efforts that meet the current moment.

We are grateful for your campaign support against federal enforcement funding. We can proudly say that together we successfully blocked $15 billion in requested funding for ICE and CBP. We couldn't have done it without you.

Defund ICE and CBP

People are dying at the hands of ICE and CBP. These agencies are plagued by a culture of violence and system wide abuses. And yet, the federal government wastes more than $25 billion each year on ICE and CBP to profile, jail, and deport immigrants. Instead, our tax dollars need to be used to strengthen our families and communities. How? By investing in education, housing, green infrastructure, and health care programs. That money needs to be redirected from dangerous, deadly immigration enforcement and border militarization to programs that benefit us all. Instead, let’s use those tax dollars to invest in people. Let’s #DefundHate.

Who We Are

Beyond the Enforcement Paradigm: A vision for a transformative budget for U.S. immigration

We believe in a just and compassionate approach to immigration, one that welcomes, respects, and honors the human rights and dignity of all immigrants with programs grounded in our communities. We recognize that in order to make this vision a reality, we must defund the old and abuse-ridden systems that perpetuate the cruelties of enforcement and instead invest in services that respond to real need.

For the last six years — with people like you, alongside movement partners, in the streets and in the halls of power — we have organized for immigrant justice as part of the #DefundHate campaign. Together, we made funding for immigrant detention and deportation a central focus in the fight for immigrant justice, forced legislators and the public to pay attention to this important issue, and secured critical wins. Now, in consideration of what our movement needs, the co-chairs of @defundhatecampaign have decided to sunset the campaign. As the co-chairs, @unitedwedream and @detentionwatch, shared recently: “As good organizers we know that oftentimes to create something new that meets the moment, we must be willing to close a chapter to make space to learn, assess, and allow new things to emerge… Your partnership has been invaluable in this journey, and this is not the end of our work but a new chapter!
