Avoid Digital Infinity Pools

Have you ever seen an infinity pool? You’ll usually see them at high-end (or trying to be high-end) resorts. They are meant to appear like the pool has no end. The water just seems to sit on the edge of the pool with no outer border. It’s almost like a photo that bleeds all the way to the edge of the page with no negative space around it.

These things look cool, right? It’s sort of an optical illusion, really just a neat water cycling trick. There is nothing inherently special about this type of pool versus a pool that has traditional edges. But it does command attention, it’s hard to look away from. And that’s the parallel it has in the digital world.

Digital Infinity Pools

So what is a digital infinity pool? It’s something on your device that sucks you in and just keeps going like the boundless edge of an infinity pool. Any apps coming to mind for you? We’re talking about apps that are designed to capture as much of your time as possible. They don’t want you to see the edge of their pool, they just want you to keep swimming in it!

Any app that doesn’t have a clear boundary at the bottom of the screen could be a digital infinity pool. Apps that have an invisible refresh button if you swipe…
