Elaine Fan / Fan Xiaojiang (范小江), currently the chief of staff for Democrat Scott Stringer’s mayoral campaign and previously New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s Director of Asian affairs between Oct 2021 and Nov 2023, hails from a family deeply entwined with the
CCP.
Elaine's late grandfather Fan Changjiang (范长江) joined the
CCP through the introduction of Zhou Enlai in 1939. Grandpa Fan had held various spokesperson and leadership roles at
CCP news outlets such as the vice president of
Xinhua News Agency and president of
Jiefang Daily (解放日报) and then
People's Daily. Grandpa Fan is now highly regarded by the CCP, although he died of unknown causes — possibly suicide — during the Cultural Revolution.
Grandpa Fan’s second son and Elaine’s father Fan Dongsheng (范东升), currently a professor at
Shantou University’s Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication and previously the dean of the school, was Deputy Chief of the Political Education Department of the News Bureau of
Central Propaganda Department and president / editorial director of
state-owned The China Press (侨报) in New York between 1999 and 2005.
Fan Susu (范苏苏), grandpa Fan’s eldest son and an uncle of Elaine’s, is an advisor to the Fan Changiang School of Journalism at
Neijiang Normal University 内江师范学院).
Grandpa Fan’s third son and Elaine’s uncle Fan Xiaojun (范小军), a Senior Colonel of
PLA, was previously Deputy Political Commissar of the 307 Hospital of the PLA in Beijing.
Grandpa Fan’s youngest son and another uncle of Elaine’s, Fan Xiaojian (范小建), joined the CCP in 1976 and has held multiple
government and party roles, including Vice Minister of Agriculture from 2000 to 2009.
