Irish MMA fighter Paddy McCorry shouts 'Free Palestine' as he beats Israeli opponent and former soldier
Irish MMA Fighter Paddy McCorry shouted "Free Palestine" in an act of solidarity with Gaza after he won a fight against an Israeli opponent on Saturday.
McCorry, 27, beat Israel’s Shuki Farage at Cage Warriors 189 event in Rome, Italy, with a unanimous decision. In videos shared online, McCorry appeared to be the much stronger opponent, hitting at Farage on multiple occasions.
Viral footage shared online showed the Irish fighter shouting the slogan in Farage’s faces he beats the former Israeli army soldier to the ground of the fighting cage, which encouraged spectators to shout "Free Palestine" as well.
The fighter also posted a clip of the video on his account on X, captioning it "Street justice" followed by the Irish and Palestinian flags.
Following the bout and McCorry’s victory, the fighter was draped with the Palestinian flag as the referee announced him as the winner. He also used the victory announcement to shout "Free Palestine" again.
McCorry’s show of Palestinian solidarity also reflects Ireland's consistent sympathy with the Palestinian cause and its public statements denouncing Israel's occupation and violence.
Last week, Ireland's deputy prime minister Simon Harris stressed that his government stood by a statement saying that Israel is committing a genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza - becoming the first European nation to do so.
In May last year, amid Israel's onslaught, Ireland recognised the state of Palestine along with a host of other European countries, including Spain.
More than 4,300 have been killed since Israel ramped up its airstrikes on Gaza since 18 March, with dozens killed every day. At least 54,418 have been killed since 7 October, 2023.
Elsewhere on Saturday, fans of French club Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday chanted pro-Palestinian slogans inside Munich's Allianz Arena Stadium urging for an end to the genocide in Gaza during the Champions League final against Inter Milan.
Over 120 media organisations including The New Arab sign letter calling for access to Gaza
The New Arab has joined over 120 international media organisations in an open letter calling for full access to the Gaza Strip to report on Israel’s war.
The open letter has been coordinated by the Committee to Protect Journalists, an independent NGO that promotes press freedoms around the world.
Israel bars media workers from entering the besieged coastal enclave and obtaining permits has often been very difficult.
More than 200 journalists have been killed on duty in Gaza in both direct and indirect Israeli attacks since the start of the war in October 2023.
Below is the full open letter:
We, the undersigned, call for immediate, independent, and unrestricted international media access to Gaza and for full protection of journalists who continue to report under siege.
For 20 months, the Israeli authorities have refused to grant journalists outside of Gaza independent access to the Palestinian territory – a situation that is without precedent in modern warfare. Local journalists, those best positioned to tell the truth, face displacement and starvation. To date, nearly 200 journalists have been killed by the Israeli military. Many more have been injured and face constant threats to their lives for doing their jobs: bearing witness.
This is a direct attack on press freedom and the right to information.
We understand the inherent risks in reporting from war zones. These are risks that many of our organisations have taken over decades in order to investigate, document developments as they occur, and understand the impacts of war.
At this pivotal moment, with renewed military action and efforts to resume the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, it is vital that Israel open Gaza’s borders for international journalists to be able to report freely and that Israel abides by its international obligations to protect journalists as civilians.
We call on world leaders, governments, and international institutions to act immediately to ensure this.
