May 30: 🇨🇳 national Gao Haoxiang, a former University of Michigan student who voted illegally in the 2024 election, was charged with the federal offense of flight to avoid prosecution based on the allegations that he jumped bond and fled the US to avoid his state offenses. After being charged with false claims to register or vote and voting by aliens in 15th District Court in Ann Arbor on Nov 8 last year, Gao surrendered a 🇨🇳 passport in his name bearing a serial number ending in “1332” and was released on bond. However, on Jan 19, he boarded Delta Flight 389 at Detroit Metropolitan Airport and flew to Shanghai using a different 🇨🇳 passport in his name that included a serial number ending in “7137”. It was unclear how he obtained the second passport, and the US does not have an extradition treaty with China. Gao illegally registered to vote in the days before the 2024 presidential election, apparently using his University of Michigan student ID, and then cast a ballot in the election at a polling location located at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Gao made false statements regarding his citizenship on his voter registration application and his early voting application. After being charged with state offenses, the state court granted Gao a $5,000 personal bond with conditions, including that he does not leave the State of Michigan and that he surrenders his passport for the pendency of the case. Gao did surrender his 🇨🇳 passport but eventually he fled the US with a different 🇨🇳 passport on Jan 19. eu.detroitnews.com/story/news/loc justice.gov/usao-edmi/pr/c eu.freep.com/story/news/loc
