New research by SESP's Eleanor O'Rourke offers new insights into why computer science students become self-critical. The study won the Best Paper Award at the 2024 Association for Computing Machinery’s Conference on International Computing Education Research. It was co-authored by Northwestern University graduate students Melissa Chen, a third-year doctoral student in computer science, and Yinmaio Li, a PhD candidate pursuing a joint degree in computer science and learning sciences, the first program of its kind in the US.

Excited to give a new talk on "Planning Agents for Collaborative Reasoning and Multimodal Generation" ➡️ ➡️ diverse, adaptive, and uncertainty-calibrated AI planning agents that can communicate and collaborate for: (1) robust and grounded multi-agent reasoning and actions (on math, commonsense, coding, games, etc.) (2) interpretable, controllable planning/programming for multimodal generation (across text, images, videos, audio, layouts, environments). A couple of updates: 1. I successfully defended my MS thesis at UC Santa Barbara back in September and 2. I am starting (and just finished the first quarter of) my PhD in Computer Science at the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington! A special thanks to anyone that was forced to read one of my research statements, papers, my thesis, or was otherwise (unwillingly) made a part of the long application journey.

Digital Humanities is a new course at Whitworth that’s part of the revamped B.A. in computer science, now called interdisciplinary computer science. Students in Digital Humanities have been engaging in lively discussions this semester with guest speakers about how we think about engaging with technology while leveraging the craft of human connection and creative flourishing. Interim Provost John Pell (pictured) recently spoke with students about how rhetoric interfaces with digital systems. Interested in combining computational skills with study in another area?
