Disinformation on Campus: The Rise of Antisemitism and the Failure to Respond

Dr Helena Ivanov

A new Henry Jackson Society report by Dr Helena Ivanov uncovers how antisemitic disinformation is fuelling hostility against Jewish students across UK universities – and how institutions are failing to respond.

In the wake of the 7 October Hamas attacks, antisemitic disinformation has surged online and within higher education settings. Based on surveys, workshops, and firsthand testimonies from Jewish students, this report reveals a troubling picture: social media and university classrooms alike are spreading dangerous falsehoods, while many students lack the media literacy to recognise or challenge them.

The findings are clear and deeply alarming. Jewish students are hiding their identities, avoiding classes, and reporting widespread fear and discomfort on campus. Over 70% of students surveyed believe antisemitic disinformation is shaping public opinion on the Israel–Hamas conflict. Worse still, many universities remain passive in the face of this growing threat.

This report offers urgent policy recommendations to combat disinformation, protect Jewish students, and restore academic integrity – including compulsory training for staff and students, improved disciplinary procedures, and dynamic policy review mechanisms.
