From the Author

Picture the scene:  it's 1987, Centenary Year of the first publication of the first Sherlock Holmes story - A Study in Scarlet - and the bookshops are full of Holmes memorabilia, shiny new editions, scholarly dissections of the Conan Doyle Canon etc.  Meanwhile on Granada TV, Jeremy Brett is camping it up in the new adaptations of the stories, giving us a very different view of Holmes from those old Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce films of the 1930s and '40s.  And two friends, Yours Truly and Charlie Raven, are enjoying the stories for the very first time and wondering why no-one else seems to have noticed, or commented upon, the very obvious homoerotic tension between the great detective and his faithful sidekick, Dr Watson. It was against this background that 'My Dearest Holmes' was conceived, gleefully written, and published by The Gay Men's Press in 1988 - to howls of outrage from the media, the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, and the Conan Doyle Estate. This new Thirtieth Anniversary Edition contains additional material reflecting upon the changes wrought by the passage of a generation:  a Foreword from fellow author Charlie Raven and an essay first published in 'The Baker Street Journal' exploring the Gothic and Decadent origins of Conan Doyle's most iconic character.  I've so enjoyed editing and putting this edition together - I hope you enjoy reading it!

I am very discerning regarding the Sherlock Holmes pastiches I buy, having read enough to disgust me with the general horrific characterization or the poorly woven plot lines, which usually include a complete lack of the detective's deductive process. So, I was on the fence for several months about giving this particular book a try, especially having heard so many differing reviews of it. Everything from it being a terrible read to poorly plotted to the relationship element being disappointing.

Before I go into any other aspect of this review, I'd like to start with the point that this was indeed an exceptionally well written pastiche done very much in the style of Doyle, with the character voices being spot on. It was easy to believe these were Holmes and Watson, not some parody of them whom the author happened to stick with their names. The plot was also crafted not as a traditional mystery (another fault of published pastiches too numerous to name) but as a true Sherlock Holmes story, with the deductions beginning from practically the first page and the mystery being solved by said deductions. That alone impressed me.

Aside from that, it made for a very poignant and engaging read. Towards the end of the first mystery, there is a heart wrenching scene giving a reason behind why Holmes shot the infamous "VR" (abbreviation for Victoria Regina, the reigning Queen of England at the time) in bullet holes into the wall. From that point forward, the story took a very moving turn, of course, being set during 'The Final Problem'. It was, at times, rather heartbreaking to read but done in such a way that it was impossible to set this book down anywhere during the second part. It's rare that I am ever effected so profoundly by a book, but I do admit to having the Kleenex box on hand at certain points.

Far from being disappointing, the ending was pulled off perfectly for the mood of the story. It was a bittersweet romance, though nothing graphically detailed. I will not suggest I had no quibbles with this, but they were minor, hair-splitting issues that did not detract from the overall work. My only let down here is that there are not more published works of this type. A beautiful read that instantly made my list of favorite pastiches.

I bought this book years ago and I realise that I never reviewed it (I really rarely review anything though) so I thought I might just as well do it now. I almost didn't buy the book although I am a great Sherlock Holmes reader/fan and I have bought several Sherlock Holmes pastiche in the past and recently. I almost didn't buy this book because I was really sceptic that a story involving their romance could work to fill an actual book AND be a good one. But I am glad I bought the book and haven't regretted it. I really liked the storyline and the conflict between Holmes and Watson as they grip with their emotions and relationship. It is well written and for me the author have captured the essence of the two characters quite well. I would definatly recommend this book.

First of all you have to consider that this novel was released in 1988, so well ahead of the movie on Sherlock Holmes and James Watson that so openly suggested that the relationship between the two had a sexual undercurrent. Actually I have two thoughts in mind upon finishing this book: one is that both movie than book have to be very accurate to the original characters since they share so much in common that only having the same origins can explain that, or second hypothesis is that maybe the screenwriters were aware of the existence of My Dearest Holmes and instilled some of their characteristics into the movie characters.

The novel is told from Watson's point of view and is the account of two of their adventures; in the first one Holmes and Watson are living together and when investigating in a case Watson has the chance to meet with a lady who shares with him some "particular" interests; the lady's assumption is that Holmes and Watson are a couple in life as they are in career, but Watson will confess that his is an unrequited love, and that Holmes is unaware of Watson's preferences. As the lady suggests, maybe Holmes is not aware of Watson's love, but for sure he is dependent from Watson to an emotional level that is even deeper than a simply love relationship. I didn't feel in Holmes a struggle to admit homosexual feelings, but more a fear of opening himself to the danger of love, whatever the companion is a man or a woman. Holmes has also an addiction to cocaine, addiction that he uses as a shield whenever he wants to rule out something or someone, even Watson, from his mind.

In the second story, Watson is married and has left Holmes; I found this attitude of Watson a little cowardly, like he hadn't fought enough for his love for Holmes. True, his marriage is only by name, and his own wife has a female lover, but nevertheless he abandoned Holmes without giving the man the chance to make a decision. Between the two, I found Holmes to be the more coherent, and yes, also the more courageous; he maybe is not able to express his feelings if not dragged to the point of no return, but at least he is not betraying his heart.

My Dearest Holmes is a romance that is not a romance; there will be no a sexual realization of the romance, and in this situation, if nothing change, it's likely that Watson will search that sexual satisfaction outside their bond, but nevertheless the bond is there and it's strong. At the end Holmes and Watson will be a "couple" in everything if not in the "mechanical" demonstration of that bond.

Even if along with the relationship, this is also the account of two "cases" of Holmes and Watson, the mystery plot is nice but not as important as the romance, so yes, I would definitely classify this one as a romance and a good one for that.

Item came as expected and shown, in perfect condition. Font size is perfect, not too big nor small. Not the biggest fan of the spine design, but that really isn't that big of an issue as anyone can wrap the covers in decorative paper or buy a dust cover for it. But that has nothing to do with the product, just personal preference.

    Very satisfied with my purchase!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very 'Watsonian' but a lingering doubt.

Very convincing 'Watsonian' style. The postscript was, I thought, insufficiently detailed. Innuendo? Yes, but did Holmes overcome his inhibitions and consummate his love of Watson?

5.0 out of 5 stars Most in line with canon, more than anything I have ever read.
Reviewed in Germany on April 17, 2023
This book, despite it having been written before Brett's time, reminded me of his performance through and through. And more than ever I understood how true to the canonic Holmes Brett's interpretation really was and in consequence how accurate I found this book. It seems to not try to alter the stories to prove a theory, to make a "headcanon" perform seamlessly, but instead to add to the canon and to tie up loose ends. More than once I had to remind myself that this was not a Doyle story and more than that I even seemed to forget at times that this was a work of fiction and not an account of real events. I was immersed so fully that I forgot to sleep over reading it.
I would recommend this text to anyone - Holmes-fan or not - as I believe it can teach you a lot about how society views LGBT adaptions of media, about history and about why Holmes and Watson behaved in their respective ways. Make sure to read the entire book, including the epilog. It is worth it.
