A teenager who was native to Southern California died after being stabbed to death by her boyfriend in Illinois, her father tells KTLA 5 News.

Jon Prince reached out to KTLA on Tuesday morning, saying that his daughter, 17-year-old Cadence Prince, was stabbed multiple times by her boyfriend on Sunday night in O’Fallon, Illinois, which is located 18 miles east of downtown St. Louis, Missouri, in southwestern Illinois.

Local authorities confirmed that a stabbing took place at the Goshen Trailhead parking lot, located within the city limits, on Sunday night. While they did not disclose the exact time of the stabbing, the O’Fallon Police Department requested anyone who may have been in the area between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Sunday to contact them with further information.

Police also said an 18-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection with the stabbing and that the incident was not “random” as the suspect and victim were known to each other.

Speaking to KTLA Tuesday, Jon Prince reiterated that the suspect — who has not been named by authorities — was his daughter’s boyfriend.

Prince said that after he and Cadence’s mother separated a few years ago, a court awarded him full custody of their daughter; however, she expressed a desire to live with her mother in Illinois, and despite Jon’s reluctance, he agreed to her wish.

Jon stated that Cadence, a junior at an O’Fallon-area high school, met her 18-year-old boyfriend while they were both students there. The couple had been together “for a while” before breaking up, but they had recently started dating again about a month ago, he told KTLA.

Things took a turn on Sunday evening when Cadence told her mother she would be going out with her boyfriend and would return later, but she never came home.

According to Jon, detectives with the O’Fallon Police Department told him that after the stabbing, the boyfriend called his grandparents — who are said to be his legal guardians — and told them of what happened; the grandfather then called law enforcement.

In the wake of the tragedy, Jon Prince now has to travel to Illinois to bury Cadence, who was born in Southern California and lived in Redlands. A fundraiser set up to help alleviate the costs of laying her to rest states that she leaves behind an 11-year-old sister.

The stabbing occurred in the parking lot of the Goshen Trailhead in the 300 block of Kyle Road, according to a news release from the O’Fallon Police Department.

“This was not a random incident as the victim and the suspect were known to each other,” the release stated.

Prince was the girlfriend of Holloway, according to a GiveSendGo post by her father, Jon Prince.

“This wonderful girl was so smart and had the potential to do anything she set her mind to,” the GiveSendGo post states. “This case needs to be shown to as many people as possible. She was so happy, creative, and ready to take on the real world. Please help me bring justice to the one she trusted. The one who broke that trust, and took her from us.”

O’Fallon Police Chief Kirk Brueggeman urged people “experiencing abuse” to reach out for help.

Brueggeman said one source of assistance is the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or text “START” to 88788.

“This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the often-hidden dangers of teen dating violence and domestic abuse,” Brueggeman said in a news release. “No one — regardless of age — should feel unsafe in a relationship. We urge all families, schools, and community leaders to have open and ongoing conversations about healthy relationships, warning signs of abuse, and available support systems.”

Police are asking anyone with information or who may have been in the area of the Goshen Trailhead between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday to contact Detective John Kostainschek at 618-624-9571.

Drew Garnier, 33, will serve 30 years in prison followed by 15 years of supervised release after entering a guilty plea to charges of first-degree manslaughter and two counts of first-degree assault in a deal with prosecutors.

There was just one victim impact statement read in court prior to the sentencing, according to a summary of the proceedings released by the Delaware County District Attorney's Office — and it came from Garnier's former father-in-law, who said that his daughter Samantha was killed by her husband because "he wanted a boy."

Samantha, who was just 29-years-old and five months pregnant when her husband brutally stabbed her to death, had learned at the time that the couple's third child would be also be a girl.

Garnier's father-in-law said in court that his two granddaughters now have a new father after he adopted the girls.

Police arrested Garnier on Sept. 5, 2024 after responding to a report of a domestic dispute at his home in Centerville, according to the New York State Police.

The NYSP said that all three females inside the home had multiple stab wounds, and received treatment from state troopers while waiting for EMTs to arrive on the scene.

All three females were then airlifted to hospitals due to the severity of their injuries, said NYSP in a release at the time.

Samantha was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival, while the two girls managed to pull through in the end.

The Delaware County District Attorney's Office acknowledged the fact that the trauma those two young girls endured is part of the reason Garnier was able to make a deal which helped secure him a far more lenient sentence.

District Attorney Shawn J. Smith said at the sentencing that while he did not feel the plea deal between prosecutors and Garnier was ideal, he wanted to spare the defendant's two daughters from having the endure a lengthy trial and instead allow them to "focus on recovering from their ordeal."

The judge prohibited Garnier from contact with his daughters through 2056, though the girls can petition the court to amend that order should they ever wish to speak with their father.

Rep. Nancy Mace presented a nude photograph of herself to Congress on Wednesday that she said had been taken without her consent as she revived allegations of sexual abuse against her former fiancé and three other men.

Mace, 47, presented the blurry “naked silhouette” during a hearing for the House Cybersecurity, Information Technology and Government Innovation Subcommittee, which she chairs, on the subject of “Breach of Trust: Surveillance in Private Spaces.”

The image was just one of several censored images of naked women the congresswoman presented that she claimed had been retrieved from private recordings belonging to Charleston tech entrepreneur Patrick Bryant, to whom she was engaged between 2022 and 2023. Bryant and the other men accused have denied any wrongdoing.

“I would run through a brick wall to protect women and girls in South Carolina and to other potential victims,” Mace said during her address. “I want you to know I have your back.”

The episode followed the shocking speech the same representative delivered to the House of Representatives in February, in which she accused Bryant and three accomplices of engaging in sex crimes against her and other women.

Mace spoke for almost an hour on that occasion and claimed that, in November 2023, she had discovered a digital cache of more than 10,000 videos and photos that showed Bryant and his associates abusing numerous women, including herself.

Bryant has vehemently denied Mace’s negotiations and reiterated his denials on Tuesday, saying in a statement: “I have never raped anyone. I have never hidden cameras. I have never harmed any woman. These accusations are not just false – they are malicious and deeply personal.

“Nancy Mace made these claims only while standing in Congress, purportedly shielded by legal immunity. If she believed them to be true and there was evidence to support her accusations, she would say them outside the chamber – away from her public role and protections and pursue them through proper legal channels. She has not done so, because she cannot.”

Mace has since been sued for defamation by one of the men she accused in that speech. In turn, she brought a lawsuit of her own against another, alleging he had “repeatedly and maliciously defamed” her on social media.

A lawyer with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Carolina told a court earlier this month that he would be representing Mace in the first suit, which suggests she is likely to employ a defense arguing that her comments were protected under congressional privilege, a legal shield to safeguard free speech in the House and Senate.

Mace concluded her remarks to the subcommittee on Tuesday by batting aside the legal threats against her, declaring: “Bring it on, brother, because there is no defamation in the truth. And if you’re going to be the kind of moron and monster that sues his own victims, may God help you.”
