I feel like my standards for suspension of disbelief are a lot higher than other pedantic asshole critics on the internet, because I come from a background of growing up watching musical theater in live stage productions.

To me, it feels like a lot of people's criticisms of (say for example) the Sonic video games are the equivalent of seeing something like this in a stage play

And criticizing the fact that nobody acknowledged the puppet actor for the dog. "There's this guy all dressed in black clothes that don't fit the time period manhandling the dog and nobody is acknowledging him! They're treating it like it's a real dog and not just a puppet some guy is handling!" Like, yeah, no shit. That's not a valid criticism of the stage production. That's just you not meeting the show halfway. The fact that you are refusing to suspend your disbelief is not a problem with the media you're complaining about.

"BUT THEY COULD HAVE GOTTEN A REAL DOG THOUGH!" yeah sure they COULD have. But it wouldn't have been the best decision for the show. I saw a stage production of Annie as a kid where they decided to use a real dog, and that dog fucking sucked. He was a terrible performer, he kept trying to wander off the set and go back to its owner backstage. The Annie actor kept having to perform AROUND the dog not cooperating with the blocking of the story. When she sang Tomorrow the dog spent the entire song with its ass facing the audience. It completely ruined the immersion of the story, and it would have been vastly improved if they just had a guy with a dog sock puppet on fulfilling the role instead.

"Realism" is secondary (at best) to telling a good story effectively. If a compromise suchas having a dog performed by a puppet would be better for the production, then just have the dog puppet. The audience will be charitable and suspend their disbelief for the sake of the story as long as it is a good story being told well. And you're not impressing anyone by deliberately being uncharitable and pointing out that the dog is a puppet. We can all see it's a fucking puppet, dumbass. We paid for the ticket, so we want to enjoy the story.

"SONIC DIDN'T CRY WHEN THE SAD THING HAPPENED! THAT'S NOT REALISTIC! I WOULD CRY IF THAT HAPPENED TO ME!" nobody gives a shit what you would cry over. I paid $60 to see what SONIC would do. Your complaints are asinine. Shut up and enjoy the dog puppet.
