Moxxie

Moxxie Knolastname is an assassin at I.M.P, Millie's husband and one of the main protagonists of Helluva Boss.

He is the weapons expert of the I.M.P gang who tends to be the most rational of the group, but is often treated as the butt of the joke.

Appearance

Moxxie is an imp with red skin and white freckles on his cheeks. His white pointy hair leads up to his curvy black and white striped horns. He also has yellow sclera with black slit pupils.

He has a long red thin tail with a quadrilateral barb at the end, as well as lanky digitigrade legs ending in what appears to be cloven red hooves, reminiscent of artiodactyls.

Moxxie's usual outfit consists of a navy-black coat with red buttons and white cuffs, black pants a white shirt that has a black turtleneck, a large red bow-tie, and fingerless gloves.

Personality

Moxxie is the I.M.P's weapon specialist; and as such, has a vast knowledge of weapons and often brings a variety of them along during jobs.

He is often the most vocal and realistic of the employees regarding the company as a whole despite its dysfunctional environment, and is bullied consequently. Despite being a murder-for-hire imp, it seems Moxxie is queasy with unnecessary killing beyond their targets, and uncomfortable with the idea of killing targets who have families, and attempts to give people second chances, as seen in "Murder Family".

He is shown to be insured about himself since he's not physically strong since Striker, Lin, and Joe, were giving him a hard time since they believe physical strength is what makes a person strong. Moreover, he is an imp who is easily annoyed and rather clumsy, as he trips over their ritualistic book on the way through the portal to the living world.

Moxxie is also shown to have a comical side, as when he talks about killing an entire family, he claims it might be alright if it was just a shitty dad or a mob family, saying "that's understandable" in an accent.

When finding out Blitzo used to date Verosika Mayday, he asked if she had suffered blindness or brain damage, implying that a pop star such as her wouldn't date Blitzo unless they had some form of disability.

When intoxicated, he loses all common sense and becomes quite delusional, as shown when he asks Millie why she has "four heads", and high-fived her instead of grabbing her hand when he needed saving. He also is shown to become increasingly flirtatious with her when drunk.

Abilities

• Earthly fire immunity - As shown in "Unhappy Campers", Moxxie is completely unharmed by the effects of human world fires.

• Musical talent - Moxxie is a gifted singer and guitar player.
• Bilingualism - In addition to English, Moxxie is also fluent in a little Yiddish.
• Acrobatics - Moxxie is nimble and agile in terms of fighting, as he swiftly dodged all the arrows shot at him while swinging away on a strand of rope to intervene in Keenie and Millie's fighting.
• Songwriting - Moxxie is able to compose music, having written "Oh, Millie" in honor of his wife.
• Weapon proficiency - Moxxie is proficient in the use of several weapons, most especially sniper rifles.
• Disguise - Moxxie can utilize multiple outfits to pass on Earth.
• Cooking - Moxxie is shown to be good at cooking.

Concept & Creation

According to Vivziepop, Blitzo and Moxxie were initially intended to be recurring characters for Hazbin Hotel as an assassin team specifically made for comedy relief.

But since the drama nature of the series wouldn't work with too many comedic characters, Vivziepop decided to develop a concept based on the two, which led to the development of the Helluva Boss series.^[4][5]

Moxxie makes a cameo in the Hazbin Hotel pilot, appearing as a silhouette in the Boo Section.

Trivia

• Moxxie's name is based on the word "moxie" which means "to have fighting spirit".
• Moxxie's surname, Knolastname, is a play on words on "Know" and "no last name". This could have been a name he had chosen after leaving his father's mafia, since the oddness of the last refers to something about not having a last name.
  • According to prop designer, Perla Cambara, who designed Moxxie's phone display for the episode, she came up with the surname "Knolastname" as a placeholder and was surprised it made it to the final animation.^[6]
• He shares the same voice actor as his own father, Eddie, and the Carnival Imp from "Loo Loo Land", with the four being voiced by Richard Horvitz.
• Moxxie seems to be a fan of the hit musical The Phantom of the Opera as his phone ringtone plays the pipe organ and suffered from a hallucination that heavily referenced the play. He also wondered what sex with Michael Crawford, the actor who originated the role of The Phantom, would be like.
  • In the non-canon Helluva Boss pilot he had a framed sheet with a domino mask and a rose pictured on it above his nightstand in his apartment.
    • Notably, the sheet says "PAYBILL". This might be an oversight that was supposed to say "PLAYBILL" as masks and roses are common imagery used for theater. It could also be a copyright avoidant reference to the musical's Playbill cover.
  • He also dressed as the Phantom for Halloween in a post from the non-canon Voxtagram stories.
• Moxxie's entire character heavily bears a musician-like theme, as he can sing and play guitar, has a framed music award, has an alarm clock with a musical note on it, and his bedroom and living room wallpaper have musical notes on them.
  • Moxxie's suit is likely a conductor's suit as it has penguin tails, and a bow-tie.
• Moxxie makes a cameo in Vivziepop's 2019 short Holidaze as an ornament on a Christmas tree. Additionally, there is a tree carved with the initials "M+M →B←" in a heart that alludes to him, Millie, and Blitzo.^[7]
• Moxxie does not swear as often as the others, when in a bad situation he often uses the comparatively tame phrase "Oh, crumbs".
• Moxxie is susceptible to motion sickness, as shown by him vomiting after riding the roller coaster "The Lawsuit" at Loo Loo Land, and first shown in the non-canon Helluva Boss pilot where he appeared nauseous riding a shark in one of the images during the I.M.P Jingle.
• In "Loo Loo Land", Moxxie is freaked out by theme park mascots, believing them to be perverts under their costumes.
• As shown in "The Harvest Moon Festival", Moxxie is at a disadvantage when it comes to close combat, as opposed to his usual fighting style of ranged combat.
  • This seems to have changed since then as seen in "Western Energy" when he takes down three bikers, each larger than himself, with ease.
• In "Truth Seekers", Moxxie exclaims "Oy, gevalt!" which roughly translates to "Oh, violence!" in Yiddish, suggesting he knows partial Yiddish.
• In "Truth Seekers", Moxxie mentions that coffee orders would often misspell his name, like putting Roxie or Foxy, which was first foreshadowed in his non-canon Voxtagram.
• In "Truth Seekers", Moxxie states his zodiac sign is a Virgo. Though, as Vivziepop has revealed that Hell years work differently than human years,^{[citation needed]} it is unclear if this is true.
• It is revealed in "Ozzie's" that he and Millie have been married for a year. With the premiere date of the episode being approximately a year apart from the series' first episode, "Murder Family".
  • In "Exes and Oohs" it was revealed on Moxxie's Sinstagram that Millie took his last name after they got married.
• Moxxie was mentioned to be native to the Wrath Ring in "The Harvest Moon Festival", and later shown to have grew up in the Greed Ring in "Exes and Oohs".
  • Vivziepop explained in a tweet that Moxxie was born in the Wrath Ring and values his mother's side of his heritage far more than his father's.^[8]
    • This was expanded on by writer, Adam Neylan, saying that "Moxxie was, indeed, born in Wrath" and that "his mom was from there". "However, [Moxxie] was raised and spent most of his life in Greed. Hence, his not very country-vibe, or Wrathian values".^[9]

  It is shown in "Exes and Oohs" on Moxxie's Sinstagram that he is friends with demons named Randal, Oliver and Steve. Randal being the name of Richard Horvitz's real life friend who broke his leg.
  • It's also shown that Oliver told Randal to break a leg, to wish him good luck, only for him to actually break his leg, which caused Oliver to be the one to perform in Randal's place.
• Vivziepop explained that one of the biggest recurring character traits of Moxxie set up during the series was that he is a theater kid.^[10]
• In "Ghostf**kers", Moxxie revealed that if he wasn't in the assassin business, he would have been a theater critic since he believes he has objectively correct opinions.

Development

• According to Vivziepop, before having Richard Horvitz cast she catered the character of Moxxie to him a little because she already wanted him to voice and thought to include things he liked but hadn't really gotten to explore in previous roles. She explains that when she learned that he likes musical theater, she made it part of Moxxie's character, not realizing how much of a musical theater fan Horvitz is, and is part of what sold him on the project.^[11]
